Over the next two years, researchers at CTF, Service Research Center at Karlstad University, will investigate how the Internet of Things, IoT, can be used in creating a better school environment and improving student health. The project will be carried out together with a number of actors and is based on a secondary school in Arvika Municipality, Sweden. The focus of the project is to find out how IoT can measure children’s and young people’s health at school.

We welcome Linda Bergkvist, Ph. D in Information Systems, to our research team. She defended her thesis on outsourcing in the IT industry in June, and will now pursue her research at CTF. - Towards new challenges. That was the opening words in the preface of my dissertation. I remember my time as a graduate student as joyful and rewarding, and it is with a smile that I now continue my academic journey.

During my time at Karlstad Business School, I also taught mathematics to first-year students, which was both fun and educational.

In October CTF organized a workshop in Karlstad with focus on remote services in the manufacturing industry. IT-based services within manufacturing industry is becoming increasingly common which open up for new ways to interact, but introducing new technology is also a challenge and many questions arise. This was the starting point for the workshop where a number of companies from the manufacturing industry participated.

On 3–6 June, over 275 conference participants gathered in Rome to attend QUIS19 – The 19th International Research Symposium on Service Excellence in Management. This international conference, now considered the foremost in service research, has its roots in Karlstad – and began as an idea at the Service Research Center (CTF). “QUIS was born at a time when services were gaining importance but still remained a relatively unexplored research field,” says Per Kristensson.

We are pleased to welcome our new PhD student, Emad Uddin, who will work on the Drive project, focusing on improving service quality in 5G and 6G networks through data-driven analysis. The core of the project is to analyze network traffic over time using statistics and machine learning to make better decisions and adapt traffic based on the network’s status.

The public sector tops the digital trust list according to a new survey on Swedes’ view of digital privacy conducted in collaboration with researchers from the Service Research Center (CTF) at Karlstad University. Another conclusion is that more and more people are willing to sell their personal information. In 2015, 37 percent of Swedes stated that they have confidence in the public sector when it comes to handling personal information digitally.
