“Elite for the day”: The precarious, violent rhetorics of privilege
The once trademarked slogan “elite for the day” was a marketing strategy promising economy passengers a chance to sample life in the premium lane: upgrades, priority baggage tags, no-middle-seat and “a separate line for boarding the flight, complete with a blue carpet and gold stanchions”.[1] Such is the stuff of privilege, and such is the illusion of distinction.
Teaching is one of the worlds most important professions. Throughout history knowledge has been transferred from generation to generation.
We develop our education programmes to keep pace with educational revisions and are pleased with the good reputation that teacher education at Karlstad University has always enjoyed.

Welcome to Political Science at Karlstad University! We form part of the Department of Political, Historical, Religious and Cultural Studies. The subject Political Science comprises around twenty researchers and lecturers.
Political Science highlights political organisation and political processes at local, regional and global levels as well as specialised knowledge of political scientific concepts and theoretical traditions.
DigitalWell provides industry and public sectors with research on the developments of digital social security services focusing on the needs of its users.
DigitalWell Research is a sister project of DigitalWell, run by the Compare Karlstad foundation. The common goal is to create an innovative environment, where research, industry and public sectors may interact to develop new digital social security services. Services in education and healthcare are prioritised.
A study done by researchers at Karlstad University shows that the parasitic larva of freshwater mussels can manipulate their host fish into swimming further upriver to habitats well-suited for when their adult selves.

Markus Fellesson has been promoted to Associate Professor in Business Administration at Karlstad University. His areas of research are on customer-, marketing and organization practice within the service sector. In addition to his research at CTF and Samot, The Service and Market Oriented Transport Research Group at Karlstad University, he also teaches business administration at Karlstad Business School.
Most of his research is conducted within Samot.
Karlstad University strives to contribute to sustainable development. Environmental thinking must permeate all our activities. We have therefore introduced an environmental management system and annual environmental goals.
These goals include taking environmental aspects into account in all education and research, making environment-friendly purchases and journeys, reducing the amount of paper and chemicals used and training the staff in environmental issues.
This year’s SNITS dinner at Karlstad University was more than fully booked, not surprisingly since employment in the IT industry was on the table – a mouth-watering dish which tempted both businesses and students.
On 19 September, 130 students from the different IT study programmes at the university gathered to meet representatives from eleven local businesses in the IT industry.
At Karlstad University, you can study English at all university levels – Bachelor (first cycle), Master (second cycle), and PhD (third cycle). English can be included in all current teaching degrees (in some it is included by default). Furthermore, we offer a wide variety of individual courses in English, at all levels.
Karlstad University Library has agreements with a number of scientific publishers where the fees for publishing open access are either prepaid or discounted. The library is a member of the Swedish Bibsam consortium at the Royal library, who negotiates these agreements on a national level.
If you are an author/researcher affiliated to Karlstad University, you can publish open access under the terms of these agreements.
On September 5-6 CTF gathered for the annual research meeting, this year held at Tanumstrand at the swedish west coast. What was on the agenda for the meeting?
– We had two things on the agenda for our meeting, impact and applications. The theme for this year was impact, but not academic impact!

A new study in the SELMA project at Karlstad University, Sweden, shows that flooring material of soft PVC in the home is a source for uptake of phthalates in pregnant women, phthalates that are considered dangerous in the EU chemical regulation system.
PVC flooring often contain phthalates to make the plastic soft.
Research in Economics at Karlstad Business School is focused on applied microeconomics, health economics, public economics, competition policy, cost-benefit analysis, and macroeconomics.
Examples work include work on peer effects (how other people impact what one does), political economy (voter behaviour and competition between political candidates for power), family economics, and economic philosophy.
