Generative AI
Generative AI (GAI) is a type of artificial intelligence, using machine learning algorithms to produce and remix content. Examples of content are text, images, audio, code and other formats.
This page, along with our subject guide for GAI, is intended to provide you, who work or study at Karlstad University, with basic information on how you can use generative AI tools in an ethical, creative, and evaluative manner.

Development in the field of AI happens fast, and rules and tools are subject to change. It is your responsibility to find out and understand how you can and are allowed to use AI in the context you are in.
Getting to know AI-tools
If you want to be able to tap in to the power of AI-tools you need to learn when, how and if using a specific AI-tool is suitable for your needs. This can be a challenge initially, but trying and testing will make it easier to get a feeling for how these tools work and in what context they can be useful. The image shown on the right can be of use when considering using an AI-tool.
In our subject guide, we have gathered information for your consideration before using an AI-tool.
One way of getting to know an AI-tool is by starting off with a subject you know well, for example something you do in your spare time or an area of expertise you already have. Basing your interactions with the AI-tool on something you already know a lot about makes it easier for you to evaluate if the answers provided by the AI-tool are of quality and also shows its strengths and weaknesses.
