Centre for Teaching and Learning (UPE) supports and stimulates the development of university teachers’ teaching competence. The unit provides active and professional support for quality development of education in the first, second and third cycle at Karlstad University.
Model for teachers’ competence development
UPE's “course catalogue” has been changed and so has our working strategy regarding competence development for university teachers.

The First International Queer Death Studies Conference: "Death Matters, Queer(ing) Mourning, Attuning to Transitionings" aims to create an arena for critical discussion of death, dying and mourning that goes beyond the dual approach to death – human death in particular – that is common within Western cultural frameworks of Christian tradition or secular biomedical perspectives.
For the second time Professor Kai Holzweissig from Duale Hochschule Baden-Württemberg visited the Information Systems department at Karlstad University.

Researchers at CTF have been awarded 4.6 million SEK from the KK Foundation for research on servitization in manufacturing companies. In the project, the researchers will develop a reference model to create a better understanding of how servitization is done in practice.
Globalization and increased competition have led to that many manufacturing companies have increased their service offers, not least in terms of advanced services.

A grant of nearly SEK 10 million from the Knowledge Foundation allows researchers at Karlstad University to launch a new research project dedicated to the contribution of modern digitisation technology to pharmaceutical quality assurance and development. The accelerated rate of development of Covid-19 vaccines has raised the demand to speed up the development process for other pharmaceuticals.

I would like to share some fantastic experiences from the 18th edition of QUIS, which is one of the largest international conferences in service research. This time the conference was organised by VinUniversity in Hanoi, Vietnam.
Dual-use products are products that can be used both for civilian and military purposes. These products may not be exported outside the EU without permission, and in some cases, permission is also required for transfer within the EU. The university must ensure that all handling of dual use products is carried out in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
What are dual-use items (DUI)?

Spaces of the In-Between
International conference in Karlstad, 9-12 May 2017:
Geomedia is a relatively new term that has been given only a few definitions so far (see, e.g., Thielmann, 2007, 2010; Lapenta, 2011, 2012; McQuire, 2016). What these definitions have in common is that they refer to geomedia as a particular technological condition.

Old sewer pipes that break down may cause a lot of damage. In the worst case, leaking water erodes the soil and this may result in sinkholes. Now researchers at Karlstad University have created a mathematical model to calculate the corrosion of sewers. This is important in selecting materials for future sewer lines.
Before creating a new type of sewer pipe that needs to function for decades, the user has to be able to obtain an estimate of the rate of corrosion.

Swedish schools often receive criticism for failing to provide optimal stimulation for pupils who have no problem achieving the learning objectives. There is a need for in-depth knowledge about gifted pupils and the government therefore recently tasked the National Agency for Education with mapping out needs and developing initiatives for the education of gifted pupils.

In an international and multidisciplinary environment with plenty of research equipment, the conditions are in place mastering challenges and developing as a researcher. Ellen Moons, Professor of Physics, is pleased with the working environment at Karlstad University.
- The group has a broad network of contacts, says Ellen.
Rarely has our research on behavior change, service development, ecosystems and public services been as current, relevant and applicable as during this past year. The pandemic has significantly affected our lives and changed many behaviors with consequences for companies and the public sector, and for society and individuals as well. As one of Sweden's largest research centers, it is important to reflect on this.

The Christmas and New Year holidays are approaching and another busy year has gone by, now we are looking forward to a new and exciting year.
In 2019, three of our researchers defended their doctoral dissertations and one licentiate thesis was presented. We have admitted no less than four new PhD students. In June, we hosted a fantastic conference, QUIS16, with around 250 international researchers.

For just over two years, Karlstad University along with society at large has followed the Public Health Agency’s guidelines, recommendations, and information due to the Covid-19 pandemic. With the pandemic now slowing down, special measures are no longer needed and the information will therefore be removed.
The university is involved in research, education and collaboration in a wide range of areas. In some, we are recognised as world leaders. In others, we receive less attention. Some areas are clearly aligned with the express needs of society. Others are more difficult to identify the immediate benefit of.
The fact that the benefit is not obvious does not mean that there is none.
