Carbon nanotubes are of great interest in both scientific research and commercial applications thanks to the unique properties of the material. A new thesis at Karlstad University looks at how the atomic structure influences the different properties of the material.
- At the moment, there are too few measuring standards and no proper classification system for carbon nanotubes, says Mattias Flygare, recently qualified doctor of physics who just published his thesis.

From 1 January 2017, Reine Lundin has been the new Dean of the Faculty of Health, Science and Technology at Karlstad University, and has subsequently also taken the role as chairperson of the management group for the research profile HITS (high-quality network services in a mobile world).
Together with five Swedish industrial companies and funded by the Knowledge Foundation Computer Science at Karlstad University continues developing the HITS research profile.

During the spring, I had the benefit of working with a national evaluation for the Swedish Higher Education Authority, with a focus on collaboration between higher education institutions (HEIs) and the surrounding community. By analysing self-evaluations from 37 HEIs, I can confirm that collaboration is a powerful tool.
Academia carries a vision of creating value and contributing towards a positive societal transformation.
Representatives from world-leading companies, researchers, teachers, consultants and politicians were invited to Karlstad CCC on December 2-3 to discuss how we can develop future welfare service. The requirements on both services and suppliers are becoming higher and regardless if the user is called customer, citizen, local resident, or patient, it is the experience that makes the difference. To offer services based on the user’s requirements is becoming increasingly important.

The university board has decided on a strategic investment to recruit more doctoral students. SEK50 million will be set aside to increase the number of doctoral students during the period 2025 to 2028.
The investment is funded by the university’s agency capital and will be distributed on an annual basis, amounting to SEK12.5 million per year.
The first steps will be taken already in 2024.

Now there is a clear definition of internet access. Computer Science at Karlstad University was one of the participants in a project in which the Swedish Internet Foundation (IIS) and Netnod brought together service providers, technicians and other interested parties to define important terms so that they can be used consistently.

The Union bord consist of students from the institution of MHI, that yearly is elected by the members at our annual meeting in the spring.
The Christmas and New Year Holidays are approaching and we have a successful, but also challenging year behind us. Now, we look forward to a new eventful and hopefully less pandemic-affected year.
We had a great start in 2020 with a Phd defence in business administration, we welcomed several new doctoral students and senior lecturers, and started several new research initiatives.

Redpill Linpro, a company only working with products based on open source code, hosted the last SNITS lunch of the year on 5 December, with the theme “Kickstarting your career with open source”.
Software developed from source code that is open to everyone to use, change, develop and distribute is known as open source.

The Holidays are approaching, and another research year is coming to an end. When I look back at 2018 I feel very proud.
During the year, we had five PhD defenses, which is eight in total if we also count 2017. It is a clear indication that CTF is an academic environment to count on. We have hosted several events, for example the Service-Dominant Logic Day, and the conferences: Nordic Relationship Dynamics and Service Convention Sweden 2018.
The tool DMPonline has been introduced at Karlstad University, allowing researchers to easily create data management plans. More and more research funding bodies are requesting that a data management plan be drawn up in connection with funding applications or when a project has been granted funding. CoARA, Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment is an international initiative aimed at developing common guidelines and principles for research assessment.
CoARA was established at the initiative of the European Commission together with Science Europe and the European University Association. The objective is to reform the research assessment system and create an international consensus. The overall aim is to increase the quality and impact of research.
