Abstract:
The systems whose parts can lead to emergent properties that can hardly be inferred from properties of parts are called complex. Observing such complex systems, one sees that fluctuations, occurring in seemingly disordered agglomerations driven by physical, biological and/or social interactions, are able to lead to coherent patterns that evolve in time. Collective behaviors magically arise out of disorder.
Managing test tasks: interaction and assessment (2013b)
In a study using an existing corpus of 199 oral proficiency tests (Sandlund & Sundqvist, 2013b), we examine how test-takers at varying proficiency levels manage problems arising from understanding, negotiating, and completing an oral test task.

The Mediatization of Space through navigational interfaces, or: the digital map as a symptom of (almost) everything that has happened with media.
After a phase of “spatial forgetfulness,” media and communication studies have revisited the intersection of media, space, and place, challenging earlier views of media inherently transcending geographical constrains leading to spatial annihilation and the disappearance of distance.
The research group Materials Physics at Karlstad University has the following experimental resources:
VT-STM and AFM in ultra high vacuum (UHV), Omicron Nanotechnology
Two AFM, Digital Instruments Multimode and Veeco Innova
Transmission electron microscop, JEOL JEM-2100, 200 keV TEM/STEM (in collaboration with the department of materials and mechanical engineering)
Access to scanning electron microscope Leo FEG-SEM ((in collaboration with the department of materials and mechanical eng
From the perspective that life after the coronavirus never fully will be the same, and we will not go back to “business as usual”, the COVID-19 crisis has highlighted the urgent need to rethink the human ecosystem. The relationship between humanity and nature, and, more specifically, the service ecosystem. While it is clear that the crisis will contribute to a transformation of the world as we know it, dare we hope that it can be transformed into one that is more inclusive and sustainable?

Ph. D student in Business Administration, how are your doctoral studies coming along?
- It is going well, thank you! My main focus is primarily on employee involvement in service innovation, but
from April last year I have also participated in the project “User-Oriented Innovation in primary care through innovation teams”. The aim of the project is to improve patients’ well-being as well as raise the level of innovation and reduce costs in primary care.
Our laboratory consist of a reception room, a testing room, and a control room. It is situated in the building House 21, level 4, corridor C, near the Dept. of Computer Science (corridors D and E).
The laboratory is in rooms 21C 415-417 (map of the university).
The testing room is big enough to host other types of activities than mere usability testing of one user before one computer.
We welcome Frida Skarin, new Ph D Student in Psychology at Samot. She will conduct her Ph D studies within the research area Transformative Service Research, and her supervisor is Associate Professor Lars E Olsson.
Frida Skarin has a Master's Degree in Applied Positive Psychology from University of East London. She has previously worked as a teacher in mental coaching and conflict management at the Swedish National Police Academy.
On 16 October, employees, students and the public are welcome to attend open lectures where new docents present their research. The lectures are open to everyone.

Mechanical Engineering and Materials Engineering, together with Electrical Engineering and Physics, comprise the Department of Engineering and Physics.
Our activities span a broad area and cover all aspects of the product development process – design, function, strength and properties of materials, as well as manufacture and production.
We are located in Vänern, Karlstad University’s technology building, where we have access to modern, well-equipped workshops and labora
In this seminar, the new anthology Feminist philosophy: Time, history, and the transformation of thought (Södertörn studies in intellectual and cultural history 2023) will be presented by one of the editors, Johanna Sjöstedt. The publication is based on a four-year network, the aims of which were to a) research the philosophical roots of feminist theory; b) emphasize the importance of time and history as analytical concepts for feminist theory; c) scrutinize philosophy from a feminist perspective

Innovations start with ideas. Knowledge of how to create, develop, and select ideas that lead to successful innovations is therefore essential.
This course will give you anoverview of idea management practices, and teaches you how to manage the generation, development, and evaluationof ideas for innovations.
… you were the project manager for one of the subprojects within the now completed Interregg project "Response". Can you tell us about the project?
- Yes, that’s right. Together with Nicklas Salomonson at the University of Borås, I have studied how travellers with different forms of disability experience mobility services.

Seeing and Seafaring: How the Scopic Regime of Computation Was Mobilised
Taking a cue from Carl Schmitt’s suggestion in Land and Sea that each of the four elements lends its own distinct perspective on the world, this talk examines the role of water—and more specifically, the sea, the ocean, maritime navigation—in the emergence of modern computational graphics.
We welcome Martina Caic, new postdoctoral researcher at CTF. During the next two years, she will, among other things, conduct research on how new technologies affects value co-creation within different networks of actors.
Martina Caic holds a PhD from Maastricht University, the Netherlands, where she was a Marie Curie Fellow within the EU-funded project Service Design for Innovation Network, SDIN. The SDIN project was funded by Horizon 2020 during 2015-2018.

Learning to weld in vocational education
Contact person: Nina Kilbrink
Other researchers: Stig-Börje Asplund and Jan Axelsson
Brief description of the research:
This study focuses learning processes involved when a vocational teacher and upper secondary students interact with tools and materials in relation to the object of learning to weld. We combine two different perspectives in the project; conversation analysis (CA) and variation theory analysis (VTA).
Jörg Lenhard, a postdoctoral research fellow in computer science, participated in the lecture series “Möt en forksare”. He talked about one of the meeting points between the fields of software engineering and biology: software evolution.
During his lecture Jörg Lenhard described how and why software engineering researchers apply the term evolution and related biological concepts and what researchers hope to gain this way.
