The spread of coronavirus has had consequences that nobody could have imagined when the first reports from China appeared in January. The ongoing effort to limit the spread of infection and protect old people and persons with previous medical conditions concerns society as a whole, including Karlstad University.
Many people are worried, of course, about health aspects and about the societal consequences that the measures taken will have.

With the current growth in user demand, future wireless access networks will have to offer capacity, which is 500-1000 times larger than todays 3G networks. Since the capacity increase through advanced physical layer techniques is limited, one promising technique to increase capacity is to shrink cell sizes, also using mmWave technologies (e.g. in 60 GHz range).
Mission 0 House, a collaboration between industry and academia with the goal of eliminating greenhouse gas emissions from manufacturing processes, has secured its first long-term research funding. Several leading companies, together with the Knowledge Foundation (KK-stiftelsen), have jointly guaranteed nearly 100 million SEK for the next five years.
Mission 0 House, led by Polestar and Lindholmen Science Park, started as a pilot project in 2024.

One6G is a non-profit association with over 100 academic and industry members. Karlstad University can use one6Gs network for establishing strategic collaborations and partnerships with other one6G members.

International exchange is promoted at all levels of education and research. The international experience is of great importance to the development of new knowledge and to promote student mobility on a global market.
We welcome Jasper van Kuijk, Assistant professor of User-centered design & innovation at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands. He will be a visiting researcher at CTF until next summer.
During his stay at CTF, he will be working on a popular scientific book on user-centered design, for which he got a grant from the Dutch organization for scientific funding.

On the morning of 15 May, a drill for emergency personnel will be held on campus in Karlstad.
– The drill will be noticeable to people moving in the immediate area, says Jan Gambring, Chief Security Office at Karlstad University.
The drill includes personnel from the police, Region Värmland, Karlstad Rescue Services and the County Administrative Board in Värmland.

U-PrIM (Usable Privacy-enhancing Identity Management for smart applications) is a research project involving the departments of Computer Science, Information Systems and Psychology at Karlstad University (KaU), in collaboration with industry partners Nordea Bank in Denmark and Gemalto in Sweden.
The purpose of the project is to find ways of using future mobile technologies that are secure, privacy-friendly and easy to use.
Researchers Johan Quist and Martin Fransson have for several years together with different authorities conducted research on how the public sector can be better, more relevant and appropriate for citizens.
The form is intended to clarify the roles and responsibilities in any future project for which a funding application is submitted. The Form for external funded projects is created within the financial system Raindance.

As of Autumn 2020, there was a new model in place for UPE’s courses for university teachers. We now offer more courses but each course is less comprehensive. It will also be up to the individual teacher and his/her supervisor to choose the courses that are most relevant in their particular case.

Bo Edvardsson, Professor at CTF and Assistant Vice Chancellor at Karlstad University, have received the Visiting Erskine Fellowship at the College of Business and Law at University of Canterbury, New Zealand.
Bo Edvardsson will spend a month as a visiting Professor at University of Canterbury. The university is located in Christchurch, the largest city on the south islands, with about 350 000 inhabitants.
