Students with additional needs
Do you have a disability that means you need additional support in some form to go on exchange studies abroad? Then you have an opportunity to receive extra support during your application for exchange studies and during your exchange semester abroad.
Your journey to exchange studies:
- Start planning your exchange period well in advance and attend an information meeting about studying abroad with the International Office. There are meetings every Monday in the months before the application deadline. The application for an exchange place is made one year before your intended exchange term
- Contact the International Office if you have support via Karlstad university, which you will also need during your exchange period
- You are welcome to book a meeting with the International Office and a Coordinator for special educational support to review what opportunities are available for your exchange period and plan an application for extra funds (available for potential exchange students within the Erasmus+ programme)
- If required the Coordinator for special educational support can compile a certificate in English setting out your needs
- Continue with guidance and support from the International Office and Coordinator for special educational support throughout the journey to exchange studies
Bear in mind before exchange studies:
- You are responsible for arranging other support that you may need, e.g. carer, transport, physiotherapy, psychologist, wheelchair or personal computer with adapted programmes
- If you need frequent contact with a doctor abroad during your studies, it is recommend to arrange this contact before you leave home. Bring a medical certificate or equivalent that proves your additional needs. The certificate must be in English
- If you are planning to bring medicine, make sure you have current certificates / prescriptions with you and check which exit and entry rules apply in Sweden and the country to which you are travelling
- Find out if your new accommodation is adapted to your needs. If you need for an adapted home - state this when applying for housing
- Find out if there is someone who can meet you at the airport and accompany you to your residence.
Insurance
During your exchange period, you are insured through Kammarkollegiet's "Student UT" insurance. Read through the insurance terms and make an assessment as to whether you need to take out further insurance coverage.
