Scholarships

Are you planning to take a semester abroad, it is worth investigating whether you are eligible for any of the following scholarships.

Scholarships for exchange studies:
 

Within Europe - You will automatically receive an Erasmus+ scholarship of between 530-580 Euros per month (Great Britain and Switzerland are not included in Erasmus+)

Outside Europe - There are sometimes Erasmus+ International Credit Mobility scholarships for specific partner universities outside Europe, if you are placed at a university where scholarships are available, the International Office will send you details of the scholarship and conditions. 

Outside of Europe - Academic year 2026/27 - Students participating in a semester exchange outside of the Erasmus+ programme in the Autumn semester 2026 or Spring semester 2027, may receive travel support based on the Erasmus+ distance bands (ranging from a minimum of €211 for distances under 500 km to a maximum of €1,735 for distances over 8,000 km).

Erik and Göran Ennerfelt Foundation Scholarship for Exchange Studies

Exchange studies outside Europe – starting in the autumn semester of 2027

Starting in the autumn semester of 2027, Karlstad University, with funding from the Erik and Göran Ennerfelt Foundation, will offer scholarships to students undertaking an exchange semester outside Europe. Five scholarships of SEK 30,000 each will be awarded for the autumn semester of 2027. The number of scholarships available will be decided before each semester.

The scholarship aims to promote an international perspective and a deeper understanding of international affairs, regardless of field of study. It is particularly intended for students who need financial support to undertake an exchange semester.

To be eligible for the scholarship, you must be a Swedish citizen and between 18 and 28 years of age during the calendar year in which your exchange studies begin. The selection is based on your motivation, reflections on international perspectives and personal development, and financial circumstances. Academic grades alone do not determine the selection.

How to apply

You must apply for the scholarship alongside your application for exchange studies. However, the scholarship application is separate from your regular exchange application, so you must submit both applications by 15 November 2026.

Karlstad University assesses the scholarship applications and recommends candidates to the Erik and Göran Ennerfelt Foundation, which makes the final decision on scholarship recipients. Submitting an application does not guarantee that you will receive a scholarship. To receive the scholarship, you must also be awarded and accept an exchange place.

 

Scholarships for international traineeships:
 

Erasmus+ - You can receive an Erasmus+ scholarship if you carry out an international traineeship, teacher training (VFU) or field studies (data collection abroad) in Europe for a minimum of two months. More information is available on the following page:

 

Other scholarships:

The Erasmus+ programme provides additional funding for students in the following situations:

Green travel  - Students can apply for additional travel support and up to 6 travel days for sustainable modes of transportation such as trains or buses, provided that at least more than half of the round-trip journey is conducted in an environmentally friendly manner.

Inclusion support and disability top-up - Students with a disability and / or long term impaired health can apply for an additional scholarship of €250/month and inclusion support for actual extra costs.

Top-Up for students with children - If you are a student with children (aged 18 or under), you can apply for an additional scholarship of €250/month, whether the child accompanies you on the exchange or not. You can also apply for inclusion support based on the actual additional costs of having your child accompany you.

Top-up for students with refugee status in Sweden - Students with former or current refugee status, confirmed by a decision from the Swedish Migration Agency, can apply for an additional scholarship of €250/month .

Inclusion support for participants with fewer opportunities - It is possible for students who face barriers to participating in a mobility to apply for inclusion support. Fewer opportunities refer to factors that can prevent participation in an Erasmus+ activity, for example: 

  • Disability
  • Educational difficulties
  • Limitations in the education system
  • Cultural and linguistic factors
  • Social and economic factors
  • Discrimination
  • Geographical factors 

Examples of additional costs can be adapted accommodation, cost of accompanying assistant, childcare, transport of equipment/medicines and preparatory visits for the participant.
