The disease caries (tooth decay) in early childhood increases the risk of poorer oral health later in life. Despite good knowledge of individual factors that increase the risk of caries and efforts by dental care to work on prevention, caries remains common among young children in Sweden. The risk of developing caries is influenced by a combination of biological, psychosocial, and environmental factors.

This is now manifesting in negative social tipping dynamics such as anomie, radicalization, polarization, displacement, conflict and financial destabilization, at a global level – new research by Avit Bhowmik finds.
The world is currently undergoing a turmoil.
Geography is a unique subject that combines the natural sciences, social sciences and humanities.
At Karlstad University, we explore everything from global connections to local perspectives, with a focus on both change and continuity.

Welcome to Karlstad University! You newly started your employment here as a postdoc in computer science. What and where have you studied before you started here in May?
In the spring I earned my doctor’s degree in computer science with a specialization in distributed systems at the University in Bamberg, Germany, where I also earned my Bachelor and Master degrees. But this is not my first time in Sweden.

Lamps that are switched on and off via an app, garbage cans that signal when it is time to be emptied and children who are tracked via watches. These are all examples of smart units gaining more ground in our everyday lives. Participants in the SNITS lunch on 6 November learned more about the Internet of Things and the technology behind it.
The Internet of Things refers to devices that are not traditionally networked, such as watches, toys and machines.

Schools and preschools in Sweden are culturally diverse arenas, with more than a quarter of children in Sweden having immigrant backgrounds (Statistiska Centralbyrån, 2017). The Swedish preschool curriculum acknowledges the importance of responsivity to culturally and linguistically diverse children and families. Thus, graduate teachers need to be equipped to work children and families from ethnically and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
