Lamps that are switched on and off via an app, garbage cans that signal when it is time to be emptied and children who are tracked via watches. These are all examples of smart units gaining more ground in our everyday lives. Participants in the SNITS lunch on 6 November learned more about the Internet of Things and the technology behind it. The Internet of Things refers to devices that are not traditionally networked, such as watches, toys and machines.

Welcome to Karlstad University! You newly started your employment here as a postdoc in computer science. What and where have you studied before you started here in May? In the spring I earned my doctor’s degree in computer science with a specialization in distributed systems at the University in Bamberg, Germany, where I also earned my Bachelor and Master degrees. But this is not my first time in Sweden.
Schools and preschools in Sweden are culturally diverse arenas, with more than a quarter of children in Sweden having immigrant backgrounds (Statistiska Centralbyrån, 2017). The Swedish preschool curriculum acknowledges the importance of responsivity to culturally and linguistically diverse children and families. Thus, graduate teachers need to be equipped to work children and families from ethnically and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

Welcome to the department of law and to Sweden's newest law programme! Since fall 2017, we offer a complete law programme. Karlstad University is thus the seventh university in Sweden authorized to issue a law degree. The content of the programme is characterized by collaboration with the surrounding region, proximity between teachers and students, and the link between theoretical knowledge and experience through practical elements.

Innovation for green transition in the forest (Ingoskog)

How should research and innovation for a green transition based on the forest as a common resource be promoted? This is the starting-point for the three-year Interreg project ”Innovation for green transition in the forest”, a cooperation project between Karlstad University, Inland Norway University of Applied Sciences and a number of other partners. Renewable materials and biomass should be used sustainably in a circular cycle to guarantee supply, regional development and growth in the area.
