The Christmas and New Year holidays are approaching and another busy year has gone by, now we are looking forward to a new and exciting year.
In 2019, three of our researchers defended their doctoral dissertations and one licentiate thesis was presented. We have admitted no less than four new PhD students. In June, we hosted a fantastic conference, QUIS16, with around 250 international researchers.

Hello Thorsten Gruber! What brings you to CTF this time and what kind of research are you working on right now?
- It is always great to visit CTF, which I call my second home. This time I am here to give a presentation on the role of academic impact, and citations in particular.

Karlstad University offers courses in English for Specific Purposes (ESP), with an emphasis on business and technical English. The ESP courses are available both to currently enrolled students and to those who are professionally active in the fields of business and science.
On 27–28 September, Computer Science at Karlstad University organised a workshop to gain external input on the research group. Staff presented the research environment to an International Advisory Board (IAB) that gave feedback for further development.
It was clear that the Computer Science research group has developed significantly on many fronts since been designated an excellent research environment in 2014.

...you have recently spent a week in Croatia on an Erasmus exchange. What did you do there?
- I have been at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing (FER) at the University of Zagreb. This is the most prestigious university and engineering faculty in Croatia. I was there for one week on Erasmus teaching mission. I held lectures in two courses, gave student consultations for master and PhD students and I held a research colloquium.

– As part of the Erasmus mobility program, I will be joining Karlstad Business School to contribute to the International Business class as a guest lecturer. My role involves delivering a lecture on International Marketing Ethics, emphasizing sustainability within challenging industries such as tourism and luxury.

Maria Colurcio, assistant professor of Management and Marketing at University of Magna Graecia di Catanzaro-Italy, is visiting us this week to meet with her collegua Angela Caridá and professor Bo Edvardsson.
Maria Colurcio obtained her PhD in Business and Administration in 2001. Her main areas of interest are service innovation, quality, and web marketing.

The research field is an inter-disciplinary approach which includes both basic and applied research on identifying novel applications of cutting-edge material science, sensor technology, advanced signal processing and advanced control. Exploring and proposing novel techniques for modelling and embedded advanced control in order to address the industrial needs is a central aspect of this research.

Ecological sustainability, sleep robots and ageing are some of the topics included in the spring semester’s lunch seminars Meet a Researcher, which start on Wednesday 25 January.
The seminars with researchers working at Karlstad University are held on Wednesdays once a month from January to May at the library learning lab. They always start at 12 and last for about 45 minutes.

Tell us about your current research
- My research is developing knowledge about digitization practices and its consequences to users, organizations and society as well as the design and visualizations for the development of digital practices, resources and artifacts.
Although the statistical chances of meeting a serial killer in real life are infinitesimally small, they seem to be absolutely everywhere in the media, from true crime to news journalism and all manner of fictional narratives.
The symposium Here, There, Everywhere: The Figure of the Serial Killer addresses this curious ubiquity, asking questions such as: Why is the figure of the serial killer so fascinating to so many people?

- I got in contact with Karlstad Business School via a former colleague and research partner, Dr Sana Skandrani, Senior Lecturer at the Information Systems department in KBS.

Human geography is the study of the interplay between people, places and the environment. The subject focuses on how we live, act and make sense of our world and our place in it. Humanity shapes the world, while being shaped by it. The interaction has multiple dimensions - political, economic and social.
