Making a Difference with ACR

"Making a Difference" was the theme of the Association for Consumer Research North American Conference that was held October 3-6 in Chicago, USA. The conference had about 1500 participants, including several world-leading researcher in consumer behavior. CTF was represented by researchers Anders Gustafsson and Tobias Otterbring. Professor Anders Gustafsson and PhD Student Tobias Otterbring presented two studies.

The Christmas and New Year Holidays are approaching and we have a successful, but also challenging year behind us. Now, we look forward to a new eventful and hopefully less pandemic-affected year. We had a great start in 2020 with a Phd defence in business administration, we welcomed several new doctoral students and senior lecturers, and started several new research initiatives.

Exposure during pregnancy's first trimester to mixtures of suspected endocrine disrupting chemicals found in consumer products is related to lower IQ in children after age 7, according to a study by researchers at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and Karlstad University, Sweden, published Environment International in October.

The service research community received excellent news for its journals from the 2017 Journal Citation Reports (JCR) by Clarivate Analytics. All seven service research journals covered in Web of Science have increased their impact factors from the previous year. Especially notable is the increase of Journal of Service Research’s impact factor from 2.463 to 6.847.

Researchers at the corporate research school Exact have developed a new cellulose-based nanomaterial. The density of this new material makes it a greener and more sustainable alternative, for example as a coating in packaging. The new cellulose nanomaterial has been created through a special process called Fenton oxidation. This process is based on hydrogen peroxide and iron ions reacting together, which breaks down cellulose fibers in a controlled way.

On 3–6 June, over 275 conference participants gathered in Rome to attend QUIS19 – The 19th International Research Symposium on Service Excellence in Management. This international conference, now considered the foremost in service research, has its roots in Karlstad – and began as an idea at the Service Research Center (CTF). “QUIS was born at a time when services were gaining importance but still remained a relatively unexplored research field,” says Per Kristensson.

Christmas and New Year are approaching, and soon many of us will have the chance to catch our breath. When I look back at our 39th year, what I feel most of all is gratitude. Gratitude for all the knowledge developed within our team, for the collaborations with those of you who are close to CTF – and for the curiosity and willingness to contribute that so clearly permeate our work. Throughout the year, we’ve had several experiences that truly demonstrated the strength of our research.

As a language technology researcher at Telia in the beginning of the century, Robert visited us several times for guest lectures in HCI for the Multimedia programme.

STRATEGIC PLANNING IN A REGIONAL CONTEXTDuring the spring of 2025, Moa Tunström, together with Ida Andersson at Örebro University, carried out an assignment for The Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth on strategic planning in a regional context. The assignment was primarily a literature study of policy documents, reports, books, etc., with a focus on planning and the regional level in Swedish administration.

We are welcomming Johan Högberg, PhD candidate in Psychology working on gamification in shops at Karlstad University Service Research Centre. At Information Systems Johan will help in several classes; for spring 2016 it will be database design and courses on different web technologies.Johan's engagement at Information Systems will run between 10-20% each semester.   Johan Högberg is preparing for the database design courses guided by Katarina Groth.

The article "Institutional Complexity as a Driver for Innovation in Service Ecosystems” by Jaakko Siltaloppi, Kaisa Koskela-Huotari and Stephen L. Vargo has been presented the Informs Service Science 2017 Best Article Award. – The article uses institutional theory to explain why diversity is important for novel ideas. Institutions here refer to the rules, norms and meanings that guide how people think and act.
