- Congratulations Diana von Börtzell-Szuch, you have been awarded Mensa Fund Grants 2023. Tell us a bit more about what it is and what you will be doing.
Thank you! I am so happy that my Ph.D. project has been funded. The various Mensa associations in Denmark, Norway, Finland and Sweden together distribute funds each year through the Nordic Mensa Foundation for research into various aspects on different aspects of intelligence. The research can be approached from various perspectives, such as psychology, medicine, or education. I applied for funding for my doctoral project Strength-Based Support in Reading Literacy Instruction for Students' Success. In the study, some middle school teachers will test an instructional model called the Schoolwide Enrichment Model - Reading (Reis et al., 2004). The model is designed to promote reading development and interest in reading for all students. Special emphasis will be placed on promoting the development of more advanced reading skills. With the funds awarded, I will now be able to purchase books in various genres for the participating classes to use in reading instruction. I would like to take this opportunity to once again thank the Nordic Mensa Foundation for the for the opportunities that the funds provide for my Ph.D. project!
- Norway-Sweden-Denmark collaboration Dec 2023
Due to funding from the Nordic network, we had the opportunity to participate in a three-day Nordic Collaboration Symposium hosted by Professor Ella Idsøe at Oslo University in December. These days, we shared experiences and discussed advancement in developing gifted education in Finland, Sweden, and Norway. Among these, we would like to make our network colleagues aware of the new Center for Excellence in Interdisciplinary teaching (Inted) initiated by Professor Ella Idsøe and Professor Anders Malte Sørensen at Oslo University, where gifted honor students are included in a crucial way in the leadership team, development of the organization, content as well as the educational facilities of the interdisciplinary programs. We believe that giving gifted students the possibility to be directly involved and influence future developments is an important strategy. The project will be researched.
During our stay, we also had the opportunity to visit the Talentsenter at Kjelsås/Oslo, where the director, Safina de Klerk, made a thorough presentation about their talent program, including a visit to their facilities for the program.
Further, and most importantly, during these days, we had the opportunity to formulate an initial common study, which we aim to present at the ECHA/igMCG conference in Karlstad 2025. In addition, we discussed a larger potential study, which includes all three countries: Finland, Sweden, and Norway.
We are thankful to the Nordic network for giving us the opportunity to meet and start the collaboration on research between different Nordic countries.
