On April 16th the EU-funded competition TRA VISIONS 2018 awarded prizes to its young researcher winners of the 2018 Transport Research Arena (TRA 2018). Young researchers from all over Europe submitted innovative concepts in order to enhance smart, sustainable and integrated transport and mobility of people and goods.

Erik Wästlund was born and raised in Karlstad. He began his academic studies with social anthropology at the University of Gothenburg and then continued with psychology at Karlstad University.

You are now back in Spain after spending four months at CTF. What were your expectations before you came here, and what have you achieved during your visit?
- My expectations before coming here were basically: learning new ways of working and presenting my research at an international level, deepening my dissertation research with the brilliant researchers of CTF, attending research courses, and trying to build partnerships for future research.

... Ph D Student in Business Administration at CTF and the research school Management and IT. Can you tell us about your Ph D studies?
- I am about to start my second year of my PhD studies at CTF under the supervision of professor Per Skålén. I spent my first year taking PhD courses all over Sweden and building the theoretical foundation upon which the empirical part of my study will be based.

– My research is about understanding a relatively new actor in entrepreneurial ecosystems called venture builders and how they can be understood in a larger context.

Excessive latency affects the experienced quality of internet services: online games lag, streaming video buffers, and video conversations are choppy or even interrupted. Toke Høiland-Jørgensen, a phd student at Karlstad University, is working to improve network performance.
Jakob Olsson, PhD in Comparative Literature at Karlstad University, has been awarded the Martha Sandwall-Bergström Scholarship for his research in children’s and young adult literature. The scholarship is awarded every other year to authors and researchers active in the field.

Students, alumni and representatives of local IT companies participated in the Karlstad Programming Contest, held on 6 October. At the end of the contest, team Bug Repellent, with Dan Wolff from Altran, Marcus Söder from Sogeti, and Niclas Fredriksson, computer science student at Karlstad University, emerged as winners with four solved tasks.

The second Mathematics Meets Industry day (MIMM®) was held at Karlstad University on 12 December. Together with representatives from Rolls-Royce, Sogeti and Uddeholm, upper-secondary students, university students, researchers and teachers tried to find mathematical solutions to problems that are yet to be solved.

It was the second year that the students got to work with content and modeling of posters, which were then exhibited in the Business school building, house 11.
Experts who are open to change view ideas as opportunities and approach idea screening as a generative process, while conservative experts are more reserved in their idea screening activities. These are the findings of a new study where researchers at CTF, Service Research Center at Karlstad University, have examined how a person’s sense of identity influences the way in which they screen early ideas for innovation projects.

On May 27, computer science students presented their theses to an open audience that included companies, faculty, and fellow students.
The new format, where students give presentations of their theses, was introduced under the name EPiCS. It featured over 30 presentations held in three parallel sessions. The day concluded with a dinner in Building 21 in the evening.
One of the presentations was given by students Rasmus Melin and Simon Andersson.
The orientation programme for exchange students takes place during the week before the start of courses and is an introduction to Karlstad University’s student life.
