It's time to look back on 2023 – the second year for the Center for Geomedia Studies. First and foremost, I want to thank you for all the valuable contributions and efforts that collectively build our shared research environment!
The examples below, taken from our news feed, provide a glimpse of what we were up to during 2023. But much more also took place.
New externally funded projects started – others continued. A new Geomedia Phd, Henrik Bergius, joined us.

The project 6G-PATH (6G-Pilots and Trials Through Europe), in which the departments of computer science and nursing at Karlstad University participate, has been included on this year’s IVA 100 List.

Mission 0 House, a collaboration between industry and academia with the goal of eliminating greenhouse gas emissions from manufacturing processes, has secured its first long-term research funding. Several leading companies, together with the Knowledge Foundation (KK-stiftelsen), have jointly guaranteed nearly 100 million SEK for the next five years.
Mission 0 House, led by Polestar and Lindholmen Science Park, started as a pilot project in 2024.

As a young university, we aim to preserve an academic tradition with roots dating back to the Middle Ages while also considering our own history and identity. In Karlstad, we have chosen to shape our academic ceremony to reflect our culture while connecting to national and international university traditions.
Originally, our mission was to educate professionals in the most knowledge-demanding fields of law, medicine, and theology.
Each year, Karlstad University chooses, after a nomination period, two former students who have used their education inspirationally, have embarked on exiting careers and are good role models for the university’s current students, as Alumni of the Year. The Alumni of the Year for 2017 are Marie Fossum Strannegård and Jörgen Svensson.
Marie Fossum Strannegård obtained a Bachelor’s degree with a major in Information Systems from Karlstad University in 1995.
Feminist comics have come to play a prominent role in Swedish cultural debates, serving as political satire, social commentary and a medium for activism. The aim of the project is to examine the explosion of feminist comic art in Sweden, popularized by creators such as Liv Strömquist, Nina Hemmingsson, and Sara Granér, among many others.
Hedmark University of Applied Sciences visited Karlstad University and, among else, had a guided tour in Karlstad university's usability lab.
Hedmark University of Applied Sciences (HUAS) visited Karlstad University (KAU) during two days, 9-10 June. HUAS has many projects together with KAU. HUAS is one of the project partners in the ongoing project, CriseIT, together with KAU.

E-Vote-ID is an international and annual meeting for electronic voting specialists from all over the world. This years conference was a great success with two keynotes and over 100 participants, included from as far as Fiji, Ecuador and Australia.
Melanie Volkamer, Professor in Computer Science at Karlstad university was part of arranging this years conference which was arranged 18–21 October 2016 in Bregenz, Austria.

In October CTF organized a workshop in Karlstad with focus on remote services in the manufacturing industry. IT-based services within manufacturing industry is becoming increasingly common which open up for new ways to interact, but introducing new technology is also a challenge and many questions arise.
This was the starting point for the workshop where a number of companies from the manufacturing industry participated.

Baden-Wuerttemberg Cooperative State University Stuttgart (Duale Hochschule Baden Württemberg in German and DHBW for short) visited us during a couple of days to discuss future Erasmus exchanges for our students studying ERP and Economy and Webb and Multimedia.
On the 24th and 25th of May professors Kai Holzweißig and Thomas Kessel from DHBW visited the Information System department to get acquainted with the department before future Erasmus exchanges.

On October 21, CTF, Service Research Center at Karlstad University hosted the ninth annual scientific conference, gathering Swedish transport researchers around issues concerning the Swedish transport system. This year’s conference was held virtually via zoom.

A series of master courses for game producers is offered from autumn 2025 which can lead to a 1-year master exam in Information Systems. September 27, is the last day of Global Week for Future, a global climate week organised by the school strike movement Fridays For Future. The week ends with a global climate strike where adults are invited to participate to pressure politicians to act in the ongoing climate crisis. Researcher Helén Williams will give a talk at Stora torget in Karlstad to show her support.

Bo Edvardsson, professor of business administration at Karlstad business school, is ranked 191 on the international list. Nationally, research.com lists Bo Edvardsson significantly higher, which puts him in an impressive second place.

During the Christmas and New Year holiday record amounts of food is wasted. But, it is possible to reduce food waste with relatively simple means. Here, researchers at CTF, Service Research Center at Karlstad University, share some tips for a more climate-smart Christmas.

Schools and preschools in Sweden are culturally diverse arenas, with more than a quarter of children in Sweden having immigrant backgrounds (Statistiska Centralbyrån, 2017). The Swedish preschool curriculum acknowledges the importance of responsivity to culturally and linguistically diverse children and families. Thus, graduate teachers need to be equipped to work children and families from ethnically and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
The capacity for innovation has decreased according the latest results by the Swedish Innovation Index where the Service Research Center (CTF) at Karlstad University asked thousands of customers to rank the innovativeness of Swedish companies, organisations and authorities.
