There wasn't always a university in Karlstad. Fact is, we became a university in 1999. But there is a long tradition of higher education in Karlstad. There's been teacher education here since 1843, and it goes on to this day.

A new study in the SELMA project at Karlstad University, Sweden, shows that flooring material of soft PVC in the home is a source for uptake of phthalates in pregnant women, phthalates that are considered dangerous in the EU chemical regulation system.
PVC flooring often contain phthalates to make the plastic soft.

How do the elderly travel before, during and after the Corona pandemic, and what consequences does it have for energy efficient and sustainable travel? Researchers at CTF, Service Research Center at Karlstad University, will study this in an ongoing project which now receives additional funding from the Swedish Energy Agency.

The panel aims to present research at Lund University’s Gender Studies Department on the regulation of sexuality and gender expressions, both imposed from above and as activist initiatives defining the boundaries for acceptable sexual behaviour and claiming the right of defining one’s own sexuality, gender expression, identity formation and bodily integrity.
Solar cell researchers from Karlstad University have once again conducted experiments in zero gravity during parabolic flights in Bordeaux, France. The aim is to study how the structure of the active layer of the polymer solar cell is formed, to thereby be able to increase its efficiency.
– This is the second time we have conducted experiments during parabolic flights, says Jan van Stam, Professor of Physical Chemistry at Karlstad University.

Researchers at the Service Research Center (CTF) at Karlstad University have written a report about Nordic food waste with recommendations for political measures. The message is clear:
– We can either take forceful action right now, or else abandon the goal of reducing food waste by 50 percent by 2030.
The researchers have identified initiatives and measures that resulted in less food waste in restaurants, schools, retail businesses and Nordic households.

On November 7-8, Karlstad University hosted the inaugural Security Divas Sweden, a national conference focusing on cybersecurity and information security that aims to spotlight women in these fields. The event was organized by Karlstad University in collaboration with the Compare Foundation.
The conference welcomed eleven female role models who shared key insights on topics such as information influence, data protection and current perspectives on cybersecurity.

Starting January 1st 2017 Per Kristensson will be the director of CTF. He succeeds Henrietta Huzell who will start her new assignment as vice dean at Karlstad University.

Current systems are not designed for exploiting, integrating and leveraging novel digitalization trends, tools, and methods such as Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Big Data Analytics or Cloud/Edge Computing. The focus area “System Aspects” address research and development that is required in order to migrate current systems towards intelligent systems that leverage the full potential of Cloud/Edge Computing, AI and Analytics pipelines.
Cristian Hernandez Benet, doctoral student in Computer Science at Karlstad University, has been awarded the prize Best Paper Award at the IEEE CloudNet conference, a large international conference focused on cloud networks in Coimbra, Portugal, that took place 4-6 November.
“The most prominent cloud network researchers in the world gather for this conference, so Cristian has received this prize in keen competition.
In this follow-up study, we explore the practice architectures that enable and constrain the realisation of sustainable school development with a focus on the role and function of change agents in schools as organisations. In municipalities, the change agents go by names such as development leaders, teacher leaders, process leaders, middle leaders, etc. Their function can be broadly described as acting as pedagogical leaders with the task of promoting and driving school development.
