Cristian Hernandez Benet, doctoral student in Computer Science at Karlstad University, has been awarded the prize Best Paper Award at the IEEE CloudNet conference, a large international conference focused on cloud networks in Coimbra, Portugal, that took place 4-6 November.
“The most prominent cloud network researchers in the world gather for this conference, so Cristian has received this prize in keen competition.

A new project on needs-driven research and development of methods and tools for IT-supported crisis management training was recently granted 4.8 million Swedish krona from the EU’s regional development fund Interreg.
In this follow-up study, we explore the practice architectures that enable and constrain the realisation of sustainable school development with a focus on the role and function of change agents in schools as organisations. In municipalities, the change agents go by names such as development leaders, teacher leaders, process leaders, middle leaders, etc. Their function can be broadly described as acting as pedagogical leaders with the task of promoting and driving school development.

The Swedish Institute for Educational Research has granted funding to three projects at Karlstad University focusing on practice-oriented education research. The university also has a co-applicant involved in another project. The objective of the projects is improved teaching within the Swedish school system.
The researchers at Karlstad University who have been granted funding all have a particular interest in subject-specific education.

The conference is a co-production between Nordregio, CRS - Centre for Regional Studies at Karlstad University, UIO TIK – Centre for Technology, Innovation and Culture at University of Oslo, LUKE – Natural Resources Institute Finland, NIBIO – Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research, Region Värmland, Paper Province, Nordic Forest Research (SNS), Nordic Agri Research (NKJ) and Ingoskog – Innovation for green transition in the forest.
Japanese researchers and students have visited Karlstad University for a week. Sweden and Japan are cooperating on a multi-year research project in academia and industry with the aim to develop robots to help the elderly live independently longer and with better life quality.

“Elite for the day”: The precarious, violent rhetorics of privilege
The once trademarked slogan “elite for the day” was a marketing strategy promising economy passengers a chance to sample life in the premium lane: upgrades, priority baggage tags, no-middle-seat and “a separate line for boarding the flight, complete with a blue carpet and gold stanchions”.[1] Such is the stuff of privilege, and such is the illusion of distinction.
