Making research and science useful (4.5 credits) is a doctoral course that deals with how knowledge from your research can be useful for society, business and academia.
The findings, experiences, and ideas that emerge from research have traditionally been utilised through academic publication and teaching programmes. However, academic impact alone is no longer enough for a successful research career.
The aim of the project is to identify what constitutes epigenetic literacy and based on that develop and research the effects of a teaching module for the implementation of epigenetics in school biology.

Sustainable development, democracy and equity are topical issues. Students in the social sciences and humanities develop knowledge and skills to deal with such issues and to implement useful ideas.
Such abilities will be even more valued with an increasingly internationalised and borderless world. At the same time local issues grow in importance for the individual, who wants to live, work and exert influence on the local community.

Old sewer pipes that break down may cause a lot of damage. In the worst case, leaking water erodes the soil and this may result in sinkholes. Now researchers at Karlstad University have created a mathematical model to calculate the corrosion of sewers. This is important in selecting materials for future sewer lines.
Before creating a new type of sewer pipe that needs to function for decades, the user has to be able to obtain an estimate of the rate of corrosion.
