In the 19th century, European imperialists viewed the imposition of heteronormative ideals, through e.g. colonial sodomy bans, as a way to modernize “savages” and root out pre- colonial forms of gender dissent and same-sex desire in Africa, Asia and the Americas.

Martin Fransson, Ph. D  of Business Administration at CTF, Service Research Center at Karlstad University, has been commissioned by the European Institute of Public Administration to evaluate submitted projects competing for the 2015 EPSA Prize, the European prize is awarded to development projects in the public sector. There are a total of 264 projects from 36 European countries that are competing and this year’s theme is “The Public Sector as Partner for a Better Society”.

The Alumni of the Year for 2017 are Marie Fossum Strannegård and Jörgen Svensson. Marie Fossum Strannegård obtained a Bachelor’s degree with a major in Information Systems from Karlstad University in 1995.

The Christmas and New Year holidays are approaching and another busy year has gone by, now we are looking forward to a new and exciting year. In 2019, three of our researchers defended their doctoral dissertations and one licentiate thesis was presented. We have admitted no less than four new PhD students. In June, we hosted a fantastic conference, QUIS16, with around 250 international researchers.

On 13-14 February, Computer Science at Karlstad University co-organized ZEUS 2017, the 9th Central European Workshop on Services and their Composition. The workshop was held at and co-arranged with USI Lugano in Switzerland. “ZEUS is a very peculiar type of workshop. It is not attached to a conference, as is usual for scientific workshops, and involves no participation fees.

In 2014, Karlstad University was included in Paper Province 2.0, Vinnova's major Vinnväxt investment in Värmland. The project is headed by the Paper Province cluster, and, in total, it represents a commitment of SEK 130 million over ten years. Karlstad University contributes researchers from both the Faculty of Health, Nature and Technology and the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.
