Machines can monitor themselves, analyse results and autonomously optimise operating conditions and production. The result is greater efficiency and productivity. On 8 March, Compare arranged a seminar on embedded systems at which Martin Blom, senior lecturer in computer science at Karlstad University, among others, gave a lecture on ”Robustness and efficiency testability in embedded systems: A systematic literature study”. CTF’s efforts to develop groundbreaking theoretical knowledge has resulted in multidisciplinary research themes: Service Innovation, Service Management, and Service Experience. Based on these themes CTF is now developing a crosscutting theme on Transformative Service Research, TSR. It is a relatively new field in service research and is increasingly getting more attention in academia.

Week 43 coincides with both UNESCO’s Global MIL Week and SPARC’s Open Access Week. To highlight this, the University Library is organising three events. Two of them require registration, one by 17 October and one by 20 October at the latest. First up is a film screening followed by a talk with the director, in the afternoon Tuesday 24 October. The film will be shown at Filmstaden in central Karlstad and is organised together with Region Värmland.
The law is an important tool for achieving sustainable development, but it has been criticised for not being effective enough. There is great interest from both the business sector and authorities in creating more effective environmental assessments. However, the Land and Environmental Courts have difficulty managing the complexity of environmental issues since the requirements for a legal review – rule of law, predictability and equal treatment – demand delimited and separate processes.

After a few issues with only a few history didatcic articles we improve this by having three such articles in 2018:1. Depending on our interset and profession we read the articles in different ways. The traditional historian read the articles in a general way and with different references than the history didactic. And this is what makes Nordidactica such an interesting meeting point for social studies didactics. The different subject fields of didactics can influence each other.
Karlstad University strives to contribute to sustainable development. Environmental thinking must permeate all our activities. We have therefore introduced an environmental management system and annual environmental goals. These goals include taking environmental aspects into account in all education and research, making environment-friendly purchases and journeys, reducing the amount of paper and chemicals used and training the staff in environmental issues.

Solar cell researchers from Karlstad University have once again conducted experiments in zero gravity during parabolic flights in Bordeaux, France. The aim is to study how the structure of the active layer of the polymer solar cell is formed, to thereby be able to increase its efficiency. – This is the second time we have conducted experiments during parabolic flights, says Jan van Stam, Professor of Physical Chemistry at Karlstad University.

The research on organic solar cells at Karlstad University takes another step forward, thanks to a research grant from the Swedish Research Council. - We are going to study the molecular interactions between the electron donating and the electron accepting molecules, says Ellen Moons, Professor of Physics and leader for the research project.
