Public understanding and attitudes towards genetics and genomics (PUGGS)

Brief description of the research:
In this project, a questionnaire instrument has been developed with the aim of investigating the connections between perceptions of genetic determinism, knowledge of genetics and attitudes to the use of biotechnology based on modern genetics and genomics.

Research in Social Work is focused on social problems and their consequences at the individual, group, and societal levels, and on social interventions aimed at preventing, alleviating, and solving social problems.
At Karlstad University, the subject of Social Work encompasses among other things the study of exposure and marginalisation, empowerment and the dynamics of shame, and user influence on elderly care.

Fifteen years ago, open source developers were considered geeky. Today, on the contrary, these are the most sought after developers. Redpill Linpro, a company only working with products based on open source code, hosted the last SNITS lunch of the year on 5 December, with the theme “Kickstarting your career with open source”.
Software developed from source code that is open to everyone to use, change, develop and distribute is known as open source.
Insects are highly important for our daily lives and the environment. The best-known ecological service provided by insects is pollination, but insects are also important as decomposers, natural pest managers and as prey for many other animals. This makes insects integral for almost every ecosystem.
However, insects are in a worldwide decline, which endangers ecosystems and directly affects our future lives.

Hi Glenn! You are studying International Bussiness. What is that like?
- I think International Bussiness is a great alternative. If you are interested in economy and enterprise and want to learn how organizations work International Bussiness is a great choice for you. The education caught my interest when I found out about the variety in courses. For example communication- and ethics courses, were other economy educations rather engage you in fewer subjects.
The strategic review of the university’s degree programmes continues. Among other things, it will be a standing item on the agenda at this year’s four dialogues where the management teams of the teacher education board and the faculties meet with the vice-chancellor.
The vice-chancellor has approved a planned continuation of the education review that was initiated in the spring of 2023.

Part of Information Systems visited Nursing Science and their Clinical Centre.
On Wednesday the 8th of June, Malin Wik, John Sören Pettersson, Bridget Kane and Henrik Andersson visited Nursing Science and their Clinical Centre. Anders Sidenblad, Nursing teacher and doctoral student at IMH at Linköpings university, hosted a demonstration of their training mannequin.
The Clinical Centre trains students in clinical decision making using a realistic mannequin.

Since 2016, a partnership, called MIRAI, has been in operation between Swedish and Japanese universities. Next year marks the start of a new period for the MIRAI partnership with more Swedish and Japanese universities involved in research, education and innovation collaboration.

Doctoral programme in Political Science at Karlstad University.
The doctoral programme in Political Science may result in a licentiate or doctoral degree. The programme is specifically designed to equip students for continuing academic work nationally or internationally, as well as to pursue careers as political scientists.
The former chairman of the choir CMB, Mattias Norén, has passed away. Therefore, Karlstad University flags are flying at half-mast today, Monday, May 26. Our thoughts go out to Mattias Norén's closest and all affected choir friends. A memorial service will be held today, Monday, May 26 in the Aula Magna at 6:00 p.m.
Mattias Norén joined the choire when he was studying to be a teacher at the then University College of Karlstad, in the mid-1990s.

Elin Skau, why did you choose Karlstad Business School?
- I chose it both because I come from Värmland but also because I heard very good things about the school and student life. The Business School has a super nice campus with good connections to the city centre.
What expectations did you have for the Human resource management and working life program - and were they met?
- I had the expectation of gaining a greater and broader understanding of working life and organizations.

STAFF EXCHANGEDoctoral students can apply for student exchange and practical placement within Erasmus+, and if they teach they can do teaching assignments in Erasmus+ as long as they fulfil the criteria for the programme. For third-cycle study, the criteria stipulate full-time study at the third-cycle level at an international institution and for the course of study to be part of a Karlstad University degree. Research is not included, but work to prepare your thesis is.
