Internalizing climate education, political and societal incentives are instrumental to reduce flying – new research finds. Air travel accounts for a major share of individual greenhouse gas emissions. A transatlantic round trip adds up to 1.6 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent emission, which is the entire annual carbon budget of a person to maintain a sustainable life. However, the air travel sector is rapidly growing and has almost doubled during the last decade.

Not only are we buying and eating more, we are also wasting more. – During major food holidays, we tend to buy a little extra and things we don't normally use, increasing the risk of waste, says Helén Williams at the Service Research Center (CTF) at Karlstad University. Planning is key to minimise food waste, and save money. Households account for the largest share of food waste in Sweden.

Nearly 1 in 5 PhD students at Karlstad University experience enough stress to adversely affect their mental well-being. This is revealed in a survey by the Graduate Student Association (GSA). – The HR office is currently working on an action plan, says Patrik Larsson, pro-vice-chancellor and chair of the Health and Safety Committee. At Christmas time the amount of household waste increases, and recycling is often experienced as messy, time consuming and complicated.

Fredrik Wikström is a newly appointed professor of Energy and Environmental Technology. He conducts research on how packaging can contribute to a sustainable development where less food is wasted. In recent years, this research has been praised and received attention in the media. Fredrik Wikström holds a Degree of Bachelor of Science in Physics at Uppsala University and received his PhD in Systems Ecology from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences.
