A large-scale study reveals that Swedish teenagers who spend a lot of time playing video games excel when it comes to knowing many words in English. Compared to their non-gaming peers, the gamers score significantly higher for particularly difficult words. The study also concludes that the time played is more important than the type of game played for predicting vocabulary scores.

Swedish schools often receive criticism for failing to provide optimal stimulation for pupils who have no problem achieving the learning objectives. There is a need for in-depth knowledge about gifted pupils and the government therefore recently tasked the National Agency for Education with mapping out needs and developing initiatives for the education of gifted pupils.

Cristian Hernandez Benet, doctoral student in Computer Science at Karlstad University, has been awarded the prize Best Paper Award at the IEEE CloudNet conference, a large international conference focused on cloud networks in Coimbra, Portugal, that took place 4-6 November. “The most prominent cloud network researchers in the world gather for this conference, so Cristian has received this prize in keen competition.
