Welcome to Karlstad University! You newly started your employment here as a postdoc in computer science. What and where have you studied before you started here in May? In the spring I earned my doctor’s degree in computer science with a specialization in distributed systems at the University in Bamberg, Germany, where I also earned my Bachelor and Master degrees. But this is not my first time in Sweden.

Nearly 1 in 5 PhD students at Karlstad University experience enough stress to adversely affect their mental well-being. This is revealed in a survey by the Graduate Student Association (GSA). – The HR office is currently working on an action plan, says Patrik Larsson, pro-vice-chancellor and chair of the Health and Safety Committee. The survey was conducted in May and June and presented in a report in November.
VIPP Graduate School, which started in 2011, will reach the finishing line at the end of 2020. The occasion is celebrated with an event in connection with Papermakers Light on 12 November. “During this year, we will work hard to complete all projects and create conditions that will enable all our doctoral students to graduate”, says Magnus Lestelius, professor of chemical engineering and new programme director of VIPP Graduate School.
In a recently published CTF article, researchers Frida Skarin, Lars E. Olsson, Margareta Friman and Erik Wästlund address the factors that affect behavioral changes in public transport. The researchers have studied a two-week free public transportation-trial where people, who fulfilled certain criteria, were allowed to travel free of charge by public transport for two weeks.
On 1 February this year, Adrian Sangfelt moved from Uppsala to Karlstad to begin work as an associate senior lecturer in Swedish with a specialisation in didactics. – It’s a great job. I can’t really think of another job I’d rather have, he says. We meet in his office in House 12 where he is preparing for the autumn term. – During the spring, I was a supervisor for students on the Early Years Education programme.
The Anne-Marie and Gustaf Ander Foundation for Media Research continues to provide financial support to the Service Research Center (CTF) at Karlstad University. Five guest professors are being affiliated to CTF to strengthen research. For instance, the AI Act stipulates the use of Human Rights Impact Assessments (HRIAs) carried out at the onset of high-risk digital initiatives, e.g. health and social care.

A small group of pioneering founders led the creation and early evolution of the service research field. A new article in Journal of Service Management provides service wisdom from ten of those pioneering founders, me being one of them.  Professors David Bowen and Ray Fisk specified three criteria by which to identify a pioneering founder. In total, 12 founders met the criteria were invited to join Bowen and Fisk.

Safe to use Zoom with KauID

Lately, there have been reports in the media worldwide about security flaws in Zoom. However, the section of Zoom provided by Karlstad University’s supplier SUNET is not affected by these security flaws to the same extent. “Employees and students at Karlstad University can feel safe when using Zoom,” says Monika Allöv Andersson, responsible for the Zoom service at Karlstad University IT Department.
Education should be based on a scientific foundation and proven experience. This constitutes one of the cornerstones in the Higher Education Act (SFS, 1992:1434, 1 chapter §2) as well as in the Education Act (SFS, 2010:800, 1 chapter §5). However, the exact meanings of these concepts are not always clear and are interpreted differently by professionals (Bergmark & Hansson, 2021). During practicum periods, students encounter and develop proven experience.
