Read, download and print
How do I read e-books?
All our e-books can be read online without logging in or using special programs. If you would like to make notes, print or download you may also need to create a personal account with the vendor.
Outside campus students and employees need to login with their KauID to use the e-books.
E-books come in different formats, the most common are PDF or EPUB. Both formats can be open or copyrighted. EPUBs are more adjustable to different screen sizes because of what is called reflowable text. Sometimes you can choose format but often only one is available.
Please see more information for each vendor.
Download
Most of the e-books available by the library are copyright protected by DRM - Digital Rights Management. To download the whole book you will need to use special software or apps. Single chapters are often available as pdf files.
One option is to use the Thorium e-reader.
For books from ProQuest use Adobe Digital Editions.
- Create an Adobe ID.
- Get Adobe Digital Editions.
- Search for "DRM Reader" in App Store or Google Play. A few suggested programs are Aldiko, Adobe Digital Editions or Pocket Book Reader.
The popular app Bluefire Reader can no longer be downloaded - but if one has it already it can still be used.
- Read more on how to use the e-book reader programs.
Also follow instructions for each vendor. There are information on which program to use when you start a dowload.
Printing
It is often possible to print parts of an e-book from the online viewer. Due to copyright it is not allowed to print whole books. How many pages that are allowed to print is set by the publisher.
