Loredana Sundberg Cerrato from Dublin gave an intriguing seminar on February 10, 2016. Loredana, who also presented the ADAPT centre in Dublin this day (see post on the web pages of Information Systems), gave an in-depth view on research on dialogue supporting machine translation between languages for the HCI group and Master students. Karlstad University and its partners in the private sector have received funding from the Knowledge Foundation for two research projects, TRUEdig and AMHiPP. TRUEdig investigates how businesses that develop privacy-enhancing services also can increase users’ security and sense of empowerment. AMHiPP will develop the microstructure of different materials to ensure maximal strength and sustainability.

Can the patient journey through healthcare be changed? How are patients treated and why? In a new doctoral thesis, Josina Vink has studied the patient journey and how it can be redesigned. She believes it is not only the physical details that are important when changing the patient journey, but also the whole structure of healthcare, the norms, behaviors and rules. A large part of care that patients receive today at healthcare centers can equally well be given at home.
Karlstad University is participating in the first phase of the ten-year Vinnväxt initiative ”Paper Province 2.0: A large-scale demonstrator of forest based bioeconomy” led by the cluster organisation the Paper Province. The UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) Northern Europe is an action-oriented network that mobilizes Nordic scientific and technological expertise to promote integrated approaches to implement the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Agreement. Its particular focus is on localizing the SDGs, teaching sustainable development and supporting their implementation, in particular through Solution Initiatives and Long-term Pathways.
The History research seminar is the main forum for historical discussion at the Department of History at Karlstad University. Researchers and PhD students at the department present their research, and we also invite guests from other universities, nationally and internationally. Seminars are held in Swedish or English. Most are open events, welcoming staff and Master students as well as local historians and professionals outside academia.

There wasn't always a university in Karlstad. Fact is, we became a university in 1999. But there is a long tradition of higher education in Karlstad. There's been teacher education here since 1843, and it goes on to this day.

The Grants and Innovation Office (GIO) has access to the VFT funding programme through its involvement with the innovation office Fyrklövern. On the basis of a competitive application, the university receives an annual grant from this Vinnova programme. This funding can be used to verify innovative ideas that might benefit the world in the form of new businesses, licensing, and so forth. It cannot be used to finance research.

Four students on the Master of Science in Engineering programme helped to develop Dysconnect, an app with podcast dramas that enhance the listening experience through interactive effects. Three proposed types of sessions: Presentation – Generally 2–4 people presenting relevant research, teaching methods or something else of relevance to the discipline of Business Administration, and which preferably is tied to the theme of the conference.
