Two years into the Covid-19 pandemic and eleven years since the Fukushima nuclear disaster

March 11 marked the day of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami in Japan that caused thousands of fatalities and the nuclear disaster in Fukushima. On the same day, two years ago, the World Health Organisation (WHO) announced that COVID-19 could be characterized as a pandemic. These two crises are emblematic of how natural hazards and related disasters continue to pose a major threat to societies.

Having grown up near Karlstad University, Yvonne Liljekvist can practically see all the way “home” from her 5th-floor office in house 21. So it was only natural to get her bachelor’s degree in education with a specialisation in mathematics, science and technology in her hometown.

We welcome Martina Caic, new postdoctoral researcher at CTF. During the next two years, she will, among other things, conduct research on how new technologies affects value co-creation within different networks of actors. Martina Caic holds a PhD from Maastricht University, the Netherlands, where she was a Marie Curie Fellow within the EU-funded project Service Design for Innovation Network, SDIN. The SDIN project was funded by Horizon 2020 during 2015-2018.

John Sören Pettersson visited Günter Alce and the VR studio in Lund. Günter Alce, PhD student at Lund University, who gave a presentation in Karlstad in the beginning of the summer about his extraordinary combination of Wizard-of-Oz technique, Augmented Reality, and Virtual Reality, received Professor John Sören Pettersson when he was visitng Lund on Spetember 22.

Bridget Kane, PhD, has pursued research within Health Informatics and CSCW at Trinity College and St. James Hospital in Dublin. During the spring 2016 she will help students who write HCI theses in English. She will also contribute to the master course Models and Methods for Multimedia Development. She has a post-graduate diploma in Statistics and will assist in the research education during this spring.
Date 16 – 18 of April, 2024 Venue Karlstad University Description and aim of the workshop  The workshop aims at sharing open problems, new ideas, and mathematical techniques applicable to exploring complex scenarios in materials science. The main goal is to identify potentially interesting research directions to be pursued in the near future.

Funded by GEXcel International Collegium   The Trans Studies Research Residency programme started in February 2017 as an initiative of the Trans Studies research group working at the Centre for Gender Studies. The aim is to create an inspiring space for collaboration between trans scholars as well as offer much needed time for focusing on research and writing. The residency will take place for the fourth time in spring 2019.

30 years celebration at CTF

Thirty years ago CTF, Service Research Center, was established at Karlstad University. How it happened, success factors and the latest from today’s research were included in the program when CTF held its anniversary celebration on October 6th at Karlstad University. Martin Löfgren, Deputy Head at Karlstad Business School at Karlstad University, opened the event and welcomed everyone.
This is a course on value creating processes, interaction and communication facilitating increased understanding of the customer. This page is under construction. COURSE CONTENT The aim of the course is to acquire increased knowledge and understanding of value creation processes through various methods with a focus on customer journeys.

Researcher visit from Bangladesh

During week 33 CSR were visited by a delegation of researchers from Bangladesh. The visit was part of an ongoing project, consequences to human health in Bangladesh by Climate Change, which aims at developing a strong research network in the field of Climate change and health. The design of public space requires a deep understanding of the way large numbers of people move. Of particular importance are their dynamical interactions and the resulting collective behaviour. This is a key issue not only in designing e.g. railway stations, airports, but also in ensuring the safety of crowds at large public events. However, the modelling and computation of such groups of people is still in its infancy.
