Professor Remigijus Gustas and Assistant Professor Prima Gustiene from the Information Systems department at Karlstad Business School were awarded “Best Paper” at the 6th BMSD International Symposium of Business Modeling and Software Design, held in Rhodes, Greece, June 20-22, 2016. The conference Cellulose Workshop, an international workshop focused on cellulose research, has been organised for the eleventh time. The 11th Workshop on Cellulose, Regenerated Cellulose, and Cellulose Derivatives gathered participants from 10 countries to learn about the latest research findings in the field. – I had the pleasure of organising the 11th Cellulose Workshop at Karlstad University.

The Christmas and New Year holidays are approaching and maybe some time off. Soon we can put another eventful and challenging year behind us and look forward to new ideas, exciting research and education. When I look back and summarize the past year, there are several important achievements and notable results. First, and most important, are the efforts everyone has made in these challenging times.

Karlstad University and its partners in the private sector have received funding from the Knowledge Foundation for two research projects, TRUEdig and AMHiPP. TRUEdig investigates how businesses that develop privacy-enhancing services also can increase users’ security and sense of empowerment. AMHiPP will develop the microstructure of different materials to ensure maximal strength and sustainability.

An online activist with nationalist, extreme right-wing views is currently enrolled in the course Intercultural studies: race and whiteness in Sweden. The person is very active on social media, where he posts derogatory comments about the course, the students in the course and the course director. The university and its management strongly disagree with his actions on social media.

The "forgotten" asylum seekers from Afghanistan – A study on inclusion and exclusion processes affecting young Hazara refugees in Sweden. This project is a collaboration between Martin Joormann (Associate Professor in Social Work at KAU) and Anna Lundberg (Professor in Sociology of Law at LU). The project aims to conduct a joint analysis of previously collected data, supplement it with additional data in the form of public documentation, and publish a scientific article.
