A small group of pioneering founders led the creation and early evolution of the service research field. A new article in Journal of Service Management provides service wisdom from ten of those pioneering founders, me being one of them.
Professors David Bowen and Ray Fisk specified three criteria by which to identify a pioneering founder. In total, 12 founders met the criteria were invited to join Bowen and Fisk.

Education should be based on a scientific foundation and proven experience. This constitutes one of the cornerstones in the Higher Education Act (SFS, 1992:1434, 1 chapter §2) as well as in the Education Act (SFS, 2010:800, 1 chapter §5). The introduction of new technologies such as machine learning and big data analytics requires new skills in employees and often new ways of working. It also enables new business models, such as MaaS (Manufacturing as a Service), which builds on lean principles and the adaptive smart factories of the future.

Anna-Lena Almqvist was born and raised in Umeå, where she also completed her PhD following a bachelor’s degree in sociology at Stockholm University.
Her doctoral thesis focused on how families combine work and childcare in five European countries. She recently started her employment at Karlstad University.

Jessica Comte, what did you study at Karlstad Business School?
- The Bachelor’s programme in IT, Project Management and ERP Systems from 2018 to 2020, and the Master’s programme in Information Systems from 2020 to 2022.
Why did a Master’s programme at Karlstad Business School appeal to you?
- I already had a career when I was looking for programmes, and I needed my studies to be 100% remote.
Working less can make people healthier – and also more creative and more productive. New research shows that a reduction in working hours can be associated with improved work ability, lower stress levels, and organizational behavioral changes.
Which results would you say are the most important in your research?
– We see strong results regarding health, says Lena Lid Falkman.
Rose (Research on Subject-specific Education) is a multidisciplinary research environment with a special interest in subject-specific – learning and teaching in subjects. It includes how the content of teaching is selected and how different teaching methods affect and shape the subject content, from primary school to higher education. The focus is on what happens in the classroom, and on the interaction between teachers and students in the learning process.
