Georg Gulyas, Professor of Guitar
Georg Gulyas was born in Säffle. His Hungarian father worked at the city library while his Finnish mother worked at the church daycare centre. He acquired his basic qualification in classical guitar from Malmö Academy of Music.

After completing his degree, he continued his studies at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, École Normale de Musique de Paris and Juilliard School in New York. He began his employment at Ingesund School of Music in 2012, where he primarily teaches solo guitar playing, chamber music and instrumental methodology.
"Alongside my teaching, I work as a freelance musician and since 2020 I have been conducting artistic research at Luleå University of Technology. In my research project The process of interpretation through literary texts/Pedagogical approaches to more conscious artistic processes of interpretation finding, I explore how, as an interpreter in the field of Western art music, you can raise awareness of the interpretation process of a piece of music through the use of various metaphorical concepts. My research interest is driven by a curiosity to create a tool that helps me and my students to reflect more deeply on musical interpretation. This allows us to broaden the framework of interpretation and bring the music to life, in line with the learning outcomes of our Bachelor’s Programme in Music. My study also contributes to the development of new teaching formats in higher music education. It also includes a combination of artistic and pedagogical research disciplines as I study how literary texts can be used to promote teaching in musical interpretation."
Georg Gulyas has an extensive discography that includes composers such as J.S. Bach, Heitor Villa-Lobos, Benjamin Britten and Alberto Ginastera.
"Two career highlights are my grammis in Hong Kong and the award Artist of the Month in Naxos, 2021. Examples of concerts that meant a lot to me are my solo performances with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra and S:t Petersburg Academic Symphony Orchestra in S:t Petersburg."
Georg Gulyas lives in Stockholm with his wife, who works as an opera director. With two adult children, he has plenty of time to focus on his research, teaching and concerts nowadays.
