Majken Jul Sørensen, senior lecturer of sociology, has recently been appointed Director of the popular CRS graduate school together with Marie Nordfeldt, professor of social work. Majken Jul Sørensen's research deals primarily with non-violent resistance and grassroot movements. Her interest in non-violent social movements, conflict change, as well as humour and political activism, centres, among other things, on human capacity to effect change from the bottom-up.

Karlstad University arrange an academic celebration in the autumn of every year. The celebration includes doctoral and honorary doctorate conferment ceremonies, the installation of new professors, and presentation of medals and scholarships. Karlstad University was inaugurated on 22 January 1999. As a young university, we wish to preserve a long-standing academic tradition of ceremonies dating back to the Middle Ages, while commemorating our own history and identity.

The research project “Sámi ‘Trail of Tears’ Walking Trail” has now been completed. Richard Ek, professor of human geography and project leader, talks about the importance of the control being with the indigenous population and that the culture surrounding Sápmi is extremely important in keeping the stories surrounding the forced displacement of the Sámi alive. – Our findings have confirmed what we’ve known all along, Richard Ek explains.

It is that time of the year when we indulge a lot more in food. Not only are we buying and eating more, we are also wasting more. – During major food holidays, we tend to buy a little extra and things we don't normally use, increasing the risk of waste, says Helén Williams at the Service Research Center (CTF) at Karlstad University. Planning is key to minimise food waste, and save money. Households account for the largest share of food waste in Sweden.

Angela Caridà, research fellow at University Magna Graecia of Catanzaro, Italy, will be visiting CTF during the next three months. This is her second time at CTF. She visited us during three months last year.  Angela Caridà have a Ph D in Economic and Management of Healthcare. Her main areas of interest are service innovation, interactive marketing and co-creation. In the last two years her research focus has been on the service innovation in healthcare.

Digitalization and GDPR have made management of personal data increasingly demanding for many organizations, as well as citizens. Last year there were reports on 2300 personal data incidents to the Swedish Data Protection Authority, of which one quarter concerned the public sector. In addition to legal and technical challenges, there are also questions on how value is created with personal data, and not least on whose terms.

On December 5, researchers at CTF, Service Research Center at Karlstad University, received the Lidl Future Initiatives award of 3.8 million SEK to start up a new research project on transformative packaging design.
Tobias Hübinette has a Ph.D in Korean Studies, and is Associate Professor in Intercultural Education and primarily teaches Intercultural Studies and Swedish as a Second Language, as well as Gender Studies and Comparative literature. Hübinette’s research revolves around Swedish critical race- and whiteness studies, as well as adoption, migration, minorities, Korea, Asians and Swedishness. He has, for instance, published the book "Att skriva om svenskheten.

Last Thursday international students received diploma at a farewell ceremony for those who had studied at Karlstad University for one semester. Matthew Argier and Ryan Moore from Canada Kanada return home with many new experiences. Every semester there is a farewell ceremony for international students at Karlstad University and last Thursday pro vice chancellor Thomas Blom presented diplomas to them. The ceremony was followed by mingling and entertainment.
