Welcome to Karlstad University! You newly started your employment here as a postdoc in computer science. What and where have you studied before you started here in May? In the spring I earned my doctor’s degree in computer science with a specialization in distributed systems at the University in Bamberg, Germany, where I also earned my Bachelor and Master degrees. But this is not my first time in Sweden.

Software aroused curiosity

Per Hurtig and Johan Garcia have developed a software for deterministic emulation, which was recently presented at the conference Netdev 1.1 in Seville and attracted favorable attention. Several conference participants said that deterministic emulation would be useful to them. When computers communicate with each other, the transmission is regulated by transport protocols.

The EU H2020 funded project MONROE (Measuring Mobile Broadband Networks in Europe) builds and operates an open, European-scale platform with multi-homing capabilities to run experiments on operational Mobile Broadband (MBB) networks. On 8 March, Compare arranged a seminar on embedded systems at which Martin Blom, senior lecturer in computer science at Karlstad University, among others, gave a lecture on ”Robustness and efficiency testability in embedded systems: A systematic literature study”. In the past year, a new network for actors working on or interested in embedded systems has emerged in Värmland and neighbouring areas.

A few years ago, Per Hurtig, researcher at Karlstad University, submitted a standardisation proposal to speed up the internet to the IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force)*. Now, in 2016, the standard is finished. Standardising internet mechanisms is a long process and since the first proposal of the optimisation RTOR (RTO Restart) was submitted, it has been evaluated and refined by the IETF “TCP Maintenance and Minor Extensions” working group.
