Future network services in multiple cloud-based environments
2017-06-30Internet services are becoming a greater part of our daily lives and the more complex the service, the higher the demands placed on the systems and networks behind the services. During this week, 26-30 June, Computer Science at Karlstad University arranged the ACRO 2017 summer school that focused on the control and management of network traffic and latency linked to future network services in multiple cloud-based environments.
”The development of network services is moving towards virtualisation and multiple cloud-based environments. This means that more and more services are linked through functions in many different systems and that large volume of data are transported between the systems,” says Andreas Kassler, professor in computer science and one of the summer school organisers.
The present technology lacks efficient ways of managing and controlling the networking and latency aspects. However, for new services that are placed in or controlled from the Cloud, latency is becoming more and more crucial, for example, autonomous cars or future industrial control systems.
The Summer School ACRO 2017
The Summer School “ACRO 2017 - International Summer School on Latency Control for Internet of Services” is designed for PhD students and early stage researchers studying communications and cloud computing or related areas. Nearly 50 researchers, mainly from different parts of Europe, participated during the week. The summer school contained lectures by international experts, hands-on labs, and poster presentations by participants.
Klervie Toczé, research student at Linköpings universitet was one of the participants and her thoughts about ACRO 2017 was:
“It has been an intense week which it should be. We have had the opportunity to listen to different researchers with focus on diverse topics and perspectives. It has been a very nice experience and a great opportunity to meet and discuss with other researchers.”
ACRO 2017 is organised by COST Action ACROSS on Autonomous Control for a Reliable Internet of Services with the support of the KK funded projects READY, A Research Environment for Advancing Low Latency Internet and HITS, High Quality Network Services in a Mobile World.
Important elements in a postgraduate training
“Summer schools are important elements in a postgraduate training and for us in Karlstad it is important to organise the event. It gives us a chance to show our environment to experts and researchers from all around the world,” says Andreas Kassler. ”Our PhD students get the opportunity to learn from international expertise in their research areas and build networks with other researchers and doctoral students around the world.”
