How 6G can transform healthcare education

The 6G-PATH project (6G-Pilots and Trials Through Europe), involving both Computer Science and Nursing recently presented its technology to an audience during a fully attended seminar.

The aim of the project is to advance education in health and medical care by using communication technologies such as 5G and 6G, combined with Extended Reality (XR) and Virtual Reality (VR).

The goal is to make healthcare education more realistic and flexible, for example through VR and remote training where simulators and equipment can be used outside traditional classrooms. The technology can also support healthcare personnel in acute situations by allowing experts to join remotely.

Research Methodology in Building Engineering and Architecture

A new publication presents guidance on how methodology can be used more effectively within the architecture, engineering, and construction sectors.

New Project in Solar Cell Research Begins

The new project HiPER-Ni aligns with the global transition to renewable energy by addressing resource scarcity, reducing manufacturing costs, and improving both sustainability and efficiency, according to the Swedish Energy Agency, which is the funder.

    – The project aims to replace costly silver with a new, silver-free metallization based on nickel, says Markus Rinio, Professor of Physics.

As the solar cell industry scales up toward an annual production capacity of 1,000 gigawatts, silver consumption is expected to represent nearly 30 percent of global production, estimated at 30,000 tons per year by 2028.

Balanced budget with continued investment power for 2026

The university board approved the 2026 budget at its meeting on 27 November. The forward-looking investments in Eunice, doctoral students and associate senior lecturers, which are financed through the university’s agency capital, will continue. The rest of the budget is expected to be balanced.

The university’s finances are affected by various factors in society, the wider world and sometimes also by challenges within the organisation. In terms of inflation, the situation is somewhat less concerning than before. At the same time, the government’s budget proposal earlier this autumn did not include any new, major investments in the higher education sector.

In real terms, Karlstad University’s budget for 2026 is decreasing. This is primarily because the final temporary COVID-19 initiatives will conclude in 2026.

New research on strategic litigation as a tool for women’s rights

How can legal strategies change women’s life circumstances? A new research project at Karlstad University explores how strategic litigation is used to strengthen women’s rights and influence social change.

    – Strategic litigation, that is, pursuing court cases to create change beyond the individual matter, is increasingly being used to safeguard women’s rights, such as the right to abortion, and protection against gender-based violence. This is also a way to hold governments accountable for upholding these rights, says Annika Rudman, professor of gender studies.
