New course - Idea Management

In the beginning of 2017, Karlstad University embarked on a project that aims to develop and offer cutting-edge international web-based courses at master’s level developed for professionals working with or having an interest in service, customer experiences and business development.

Internationalisation is one of Karlstad University’s six strategic goals. The university promotes internationalisation in various ways, with regard to both teachers and students. Erasmus + ICM provides the opportunity for students to travel to countries outside of Europe in order to conduct field studies and complete degree projects. Two students at Karlstad University’s nursing programme have visited Believers Church Medical Hospital, BCMCH, in Kerala, India.

1–3 December, Karlstad University Specfic 2021 is organized by the Swedish Network for Speculative Fiction. The Network for Speculative Fiction is an informal network of researchers, critics, and others who engage professionally with the speculative genres (science fiction, fantasy, horror, utopia/dystopia, post-apocalypse, etc.) in various media.

The Christmas and New Year holidays are approaching and another busy year has gone by, now we are looking forward to a new and exciting year. In 2019, three of our researchers defended their doctoral dissertations and one licentiate thesis was presented. We have admitted no less than four new PhD students. In June, we hosted a fantastic conference, QUIS16, with around 250 international researchers.

Last Thursday international students received diploma at a farewell ceremony for those who had studied at Karlstad University for one semester. Matthew Argier and Ryan Moore from Canada Kanada return home with many new experiences. Every semester there is a farewell ceremony for international students at Karlstad University and last Thursday pro vice chancellor Thomas Blom presented diplomas to them. The ceremony was followed by mingling and entertainment.

You just came back from Bonn, Germany, what did you do there? - I participated in a doctoral course on decision making at Max Planck Institute for Research on Collective. Interesting, can you tell us more about the course? - In the course we studied how to create and test models on how we think when we make decisions.

The article "Institutional Complexity as a Driver for Innovation in Service Ecosystems” by Jaakko Siltaloppi, Kaisa Koskela-Huotari and Stephen L. Vargo has been presented the Informs Service Science 2017 Best Article Award. – The article uses institutional theory to explain why diversity is important for novel ideas. Institutions here refer to the rules, norms and meanings that guide how people think and act.

The research project “Sámi ‘Trail of Tears’ Walking Trail” has now been completed. Richard Ek, professor of human geography and project leader, talks about the importance of the control being with the indigenous population and that the culture surrounding Sápmi is extremely important in keeping the stories surrounding the forced displacement of the Sámi alive. – Our findings have confirmed what we’ve known all along, Richard Ek explains.

Janna Dervisic is a new PhD student in Business Administration at Karlstad Business School. She is placed at CTF, Service Research Center, and part of the Swedish Research School of Management and Information Technology, MIT. Her research will focus on innovation, services and digital technology. Janna Dervisic has a master's degree in Industrial Engineering and Management from Karlstad University, and has been working in the construction industry the past year.
