Requirements from funders and journals
Research data is a valuable resource and research funders are increasingly requiring that researchers who are awarded grants should be able to report on how collected data is managed and documented as well as how it will be made accessible for future research.
Research funders
The policy of Horizon Europe is that all funded projects are required to adhere to open access publication and open data, following the principle “as open as possible and as closed as necessary”.
In Sweden, the Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet) are the first funder to require all projects awarded funding to develop a data management plan. Presumably, more Swedish funders will follow in the footsteps in the near future.
Scientific journals
More and more journals have Open Data policies, but their requirements vary. Some journals require that all data on which an article is based should be made available to its readers, while others have more limited requirements or only make recommendations. Read carefully through the requirements of the journals to which you submit work. Contact the Research data group at Karlstad University if you have questions.
The British organisation Jisc maintains a list of funders’ data policies, Open Access publication requirements and archiving requirements, called Sherpa Juliet. Policy information from common Swedish research funders is also included.
