Update about cyberattack on system provider
Miljödata’s investigation of the consequences following the cyberattack continues. The investigation shows that the hackers have been able to access parts of Miljödata’s data, but so far, there is no evidence that data has been stolen.
Miljödata announced that they will restart the systems and open them to customers again on Friday 29 August. However, Karlstad University has asked Miljödata to hold off connecting the university to the system Adato.
– We want to wait until the investigation of the cyberattack is complete, so that we can make a full assessment of the incident and feel assured before asking them to restart the system for us, says Head of HR, Ingrid Ganrot.

The music industry and education for street children in new research on services
Muhammad Murtaza Ali recently presented his licentiate thesis in business administration, where he identifies connections between the digitalisation of the music industry and educational initiatives for street children.
– Services shape human capabilities and well-being and it’s often the practical details that determine if a service actually is inclusive, says Muhammad.What led you to focus on the connection between the music industry and educational initiatives for street children?

New research: Challenges in measuring cognitive difficulties in exhaustion
Exhaustion disorder is complex and difficult to measure. People’s experiences cannot always be captured through limited tests, as demonstrated in a recent doctoral thesis by Andreas Nelson, researcher at Karlstad University.
– These are complex processes. Cognitive functions, such as memory and attention, are difficult to measure, just like exhaustion. There are so many factors involved. My thesis specifically examines the subjective experiences of cognitive dysfunction, says Andreas Nelson.
His research findings show that there was no correlation between self-reported cognitive difficulties in everyday life and the results of cognitive tests. This was also observed among healthy individuals.

Cyberattack on system provider
Miljödata, which provides the system Adato for documenting long-term sick leave and rehabilitation, has been targeted in a cyberattack. The extent of the attack is still unclear, and it is not yet confirmed whether any personal data has been leaked.
Karlstad University was notified about the cyberattack on Monday morning, 25 August. While awaiting more information, Karlstad University took several measures.
On Monday evening, Miljödata announced that personal data connected to Adato, which is widely used by universities, municipalities and regions, may have been leaked in the attack. The extent of a possible leak is yet unknown.

New research shows low level of knowledge about disabilities within organisations
According to the Public Health Agency, approximately 20 percent of the Swedish population has some form of disability. Suzanne Millmark, doctoral student at Karlstad Business School, has conducted research on the inclusion of employees with disabilities when working from home.
– Based on my work experience and academic background in psychology, public health and work, it felt like a natural and interesting area to study. I didn’t expect the level of knowledge about disabilities to be so low, says Suzanne.

Does increased preparedness with cannons and ammunition raise the likelihood of war?
What does it actually mean for a country to overinvest in military preparedness – and how can we tell when the limit has been reached? In a recent research article, Mats Ekman, senior lecturer in economics at Karlstad Business School, presents an argument suggesting that war is a rational, but devastating, decision made by political leaders to monitor each other’s overinvestments.
– I apply an economic perspective and discuss the risk that preparedness may become a public bad – something that could provoke war rather than prevent it, says Mats Ekman.
