Karlstad University, together with Värmland Museum, invites you to Humanistdagarna 2025 on 8–9 October – an open event where researchers, authors and cultural figures share their perspectives on language, history, culture and society.
Dalian Dawody, 25 years old and a student at the Elite Sports University at Karlstad University, became world champion in Thai boxing in the 75-kilo weight class during the World Championships in Turkey in spring 2025. On the last weekend of August, he also won a championship belt in Muaythai For Life on home turf in Karlstad.
Starting this autumn, all public spaces such as classrooms and group rooms will be equipped with sensors. The aim is to gain a better understanding of how the premises are used. The installation of sensors does not cover offices or staff rooms.
The purpose of installing the sensors is to measure how the premises are used, in order to make more efficient use of the premises, reduce energy consumption and improve the indoor climate.
Johnnie Lindgren, a teacher in physical education at Dallidenskolan in Kil, is Alum of the Year 2025 at Karlstad University. His teaching is based on an innovative approach and new ways of thinking, focusing on motivating his pupils to believe in their own abilities.
Johnnie Lindgren graduated as a teacher in Swedish and physical education in 2009 and feels honoured to receive the award as Alum of the Year.

A student at Karlstad University passed away at his parents' home during the night between Saturday 6 September and Sunday 7 September. The cause is currently unknown. Our thoughts go out to family, friends and fellow students at this difficult time. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Jonathan, what made you choose Karlstad Business School for your studies?
– When choosing places to study outside of Denmark, I’ve tried to go to places I didn’t know much about beforehand.
Kjerstin Almqvist is one of the authors of the new book Attachment in Social Work: On Parenting Capacity and Children's Needs which is based on several years of research and practical experience from social services.
The book provides an introduction to attachment theory and explains how children form emotional bonds with their caregivers – bonds that influence their development, sense of security, and relationships later in life.
From Monday 16 June to Saturday 30 August, the university has summer opening hours. The entrances are mainly locked. Staff and students enter with a card and code. Kau City is closed for the summer from Monday 9 June.
The main entrances in building 1E are adapted to the University Library's opening hours and to special events, such as Forum Lärande on 18 June.
On May 27, computer science students presented their theses to an open audience that included companies, faculty, and fellow students.
The new format, where students give presentations of their theses, was introduced under the name EPiCS. It featured over 30 presentations held in three parallel sessions. The day concluded with a dinner in Building 21 in the evening.
One of the presentations was given by students Rasmus Melin and Simon Andersson.
Earlier this week, the Polar Music Prize was awarded at the Grand Hôtel in Stockholm. In front of a diverse audience of national and international musicians, actors, other prominent guests, and members of the Swedish royal family, Brian May and Roger Taylor of Queen, Herbie Hancock, and Barbara Hannigan received the Polar Music Prize.
The former chairman of the choir CMB, Mattias Norén, has passed away. Therefore, Karlstad University flags are flying at half-mast today, Monday, May 26. Our thoughts go out to Mattias Norén's closest and all affected choir friends. A memorial service will be held today, Monday, May 26 in the Aula Magna at 6:00 p.m.
Mattias Norén joined the choire when he was studying to be a teacher at the then University College of Karlstad, in the mid-1990s.
Western music history has largely favored male artists, while female and non-binary artists and composers have been largely excluded from historical narratives. This has contributed to musical canons where important voices are missing.
(Updated 16 May) Karlstad Municipality is rebuilding bus stops at Kronoparken, starting in May. During the work, there will be limited access to the streets. At the university, Sommargatan is closed to car traffic.
Following last year’s success, the race Kausläppet has now become something of a tradition as part of the Walpurgis Night (Valborg) celebrations at Karlstad University. Last year, close to 100 people took part in the race.
– We are hoping for at least 200 this year, says Felix Edrud.

You are currently at UC Berkeley in California. What are you doing there?
– Thanks to Fulbright, an exchange program funded by the U.S. Department of State, the Jane and Dan Olsson foundation and the Sixten Gemzeus foundation, I have the opportunity to spend a year here and collaborate with researchers at the Department of Linguistics. I arrived in the autumn of 2024 and will stay until July 2025.
You are a PhD student at the University of Santiago de Compostela and a teacher at the University of Vigo in Spain. You have been teaching law at Karlstad Business School as a part of the Erasmus+ program.
– I was invited by the coordinator of the Law Program at Karlstad University to teach in the course International and European Union Law as part of the Erasmus+ program, says Natalia Seco.
There will be a national minute of silence on Tuesday 11 February in honour of the victims of the tragedy in Örebro. Karlstad University will participate.
The initiative of a national minute of silence was declared by the Swedish government, who also urge that flags be flown at half-mast from 09.00 until the moment of silence has ended.
– 4 February will forever mark a dark day in Swedish history.

Master's student Ida Wadenbrandt worked during the holidays, touring with Robert Wells and Rhapsody in Rock from December 27 to January 6 in China. Intense days that have sparked a desire for more projects abroad and more work in China.
You have done several concerts with Robert Wells with Ingesund's string ensemble before, and as I understand it, you were also the concertmaster then.
