Using e-resources outside campus
Students and employees can access library resources outside campus by logging in with KauID. At the top of this page, we list current problems we know of and things you can do yourself to solve or at least work around these problems.
No known problems at the moment.
If you are connected to the university network or Eduroam, you will in most cases have direct access to the e-resources. However, you may also need to create personal accounts if you wish to save searches or information, or download an e-book.
A small number of databases are only available on computers in the library, or require login even when you are on campus. Information about the availability of each database can be found in the A–Z Database List. Click INFO next to the relevant database name.
Access for members of the public is available only on-site in the library.
Do you need help accessing our resources?
Log in outside campus using your KauID
- First, select a database, e-journal, or e-book from the links on the Library website, or choose a full-text article in OneSearch.
- Click the link to the database or e-journal. If you are using OneSearch, you can either click on "Welcome guest. Sign in to your institution for full access to your library’s resources" in the top menu, or select a full-text link directly from your search results.
- Enter your KauID/Student Account username and password.
- In some cases, you can log in directly on the publisher's website. Look for options such as "Institutional Login," "Shibboleth Login," or similar. Select Karlstad University and sign in using your KauID.
- Staff members must complete the KauID sign-in process using Freja eID for additional authentication.
- Staff can also connect from home via VPN, which works best when using the MFA (Multi-Factor Authentication) option.
- Tip
Install a browser extension to quickly see whether the Library provides access to a specific article or whether it is available as Open Access.
Technical requirements
- You need to use Adobe Acrobat reader to read PDF-articles. Other readers may not work correctly.
- To download and read copy-protected e-books from libraries, you will need a reading application such as Thorium. Read more about reading and downloading e-books.
- Your web browser must allow cookies.
- Older browser versions may not work properly. If you experience problems accessing a resource, try upgrading to a newer version or use a different browser, such as Firefox, Edge or Chrome.
Login issues
If you are unable to log in, try the following common solutions:
- Clear cookies and other website data in your browser.
- Disable browser extensions such as ad blockers, script blockers, and similar tools.
- Try using Incognito Mode or Private Browsing to determine whether previously stored information is causing access problems.
Please note that access to our electronic resources may sometimes not work from schools, healthcare networks, or other workplaces. This is usually due to firewall restrictions or local network settings that block access to the library’s e-resources.

Creating links to the resources
The library uses EZProxy to make resources available outside campus. If you want to create a link to a resource and make sure it will be available off-campus you need to enter a proxy prefix before the url to the resource. The prefix will trigger the login page for KauID.
