Courses and degree of bachelor in intercultural studies
Intercultural Studies offers a wide range of courses that examine various aspects of intercultural society and the subject's philosophical traditions. Courses are taught in Swedish and English, and offered as distance or on-campus courses, full-time or part-time. At Karlstad University, students can choose intercultural studies as the main field of study in a Bachelor of Arts degree. They can combine modules from the Bachelor’s degree according to their interests, studies in other subjects, or prior professional experience.
We recommend that new distance students start with the course “The Intercultural Society” (15 credits, part-time, offered in the spring and autumn semesters, taught in Swedish). The course can be combined or supplemented with the course “Intersectionality and Intercultural Feminism” (15 credits, part-time, English).
For full-time studies, we recommend “Intercultural Communication” (15 credits, full-time, English) as an introductory course. For students interested in business administration and international relations, we offer the course “Intercultural Business Communication” (15 credits, full-time, English).
It is possible to start with one of the thematically oriented courses, each offering 7.5 credits. See more information by following the links on the list below.
With a total of 60 credits, students are eligible to apply for “Intercultural Studies III” – three specialisation courses focused on writing a degree project.
Intercultural studies join collaborations within the EUNICE alliance. The course “Political Culture and Interculturality” (6 credits, half-time, English, autumn semesters) can be taken as a stand-alone course, but is part of the “Crossing Borders” program, with sub-courses at various EUNICE member universities, including a summer course at the University of Mons, Belgium.
From 2026, we offer an advanced-level course, “Communication and Cultural Diversity” (7.5 credits, Swedish, full-time). It is open to everyone interested and included in the “Master’s Program in Political Science – Psychological Defense and Disinformation” (120 credits).
