Courses and degree of bachelor in intercultural studies
Intercultural Studies offers a wide range of courses focusing on different aspects of intercultural society and the philosophical traditions of the subject. Courses are taught in Swedish and English, and offered as distance or on-campus courses, full-time or part-time. At Karlstad University, students can choose intercultural studies as the main field of study in a Degree of Bachelor of Arts. Students can combine the modules of the Bachelor’s degree according to their own interests, studies in other subjects or previous professional experience.
We recommend that new distance students start with the course “The Intercultural Society” (15 credits, part-time, offered spring and autumn semester, or as a full-time summer course, taught in Swedish). The course can be combined or supplemented with the course “Intersectionality and Intercultural Feminism” (15 credits, part-time, English).
For full-time studies, we recommend “Intercultural Communication” (15 credits, full-time, English), which provides a good introduction to the subject. For students who are interested in business administration and international relations, we offer the course “Intercultural Business Communication” (15 credits, full-time, English).
It is also possible to start with one of the thematically oriented courses of 7.5 credits, covering themes such as racism in Sweden, interculturality in relation to migration, diversity and urban planning, and culture, conflict and humanitarian emergencies.
With a total of 60 credits, students are eligible to apply for “Intercultural Studies III” – three specialisation courses focused on writing a degree project.
