Swedish understandings of race and racism in the post-war period
"The deracialization of Sweden", is a recently published research anthology focusing on issues of race, racism, anti-racism and whiteness in a Swedish post-war and contemporary context. The anthology is edited by Tobias Hübinette and Peter Wikström, researchers at the Research Group for Culture Studies (Kufo) at Karlstad University. The volume encompasses 13 studies written by researchers from different disciplines and fields that collectively explore how the concept of race was gradually dismantled and became taboo in Sweden after 1945, and how a specifically Swedish form of anti-racism instead became normative.
Taken together the book’s 13 contributions she light upon where Swedish racial thinking went after 1945 within a number of different spheres and sectors.
– There was a break with racial thinking during the late 1960s when a new attitude to race began to emerge that finally led to the “colorblind” anti-racism of our time, says Tobias Hübinette.

Greater insight into how the needs of older people can be met in spatial and social planning
The COVID-19 pandemic brought many great challenges for older people in their daily lives. In the study “Nowhere to go – Effects on elderly’s travel during COVID-19”, researchers focus on older people's travel experiences during the pandemic.
In order to gain a deeper understanding of older people’s thoughts and feelings in relation to their means to travel and participate in activities during the pandemic, Katrin Lättman, Senior Lecturer and Docent in Psychology at the University of Gävle, together with Lars E. Olsson and Margareta Friman, both from the Service Research Center (CTF) at Karlstad University, conducted the study “Nowhere to go – Effects on elderly’s travel during COVID-19”.

Food packaging – blessing or curse for the environment?
The development of packaging is one of the reasons why the welfare society was able to emerge. With increasingly sophisticated packaging, food could be consumed long after it was harvested or slaughtered, and far from the place where it was produced.
Food production is the sector with the greatest impact on the planet’s ecosystem. The production and consumption of food is behind one third of human-caused greenhouse gas emissions, 70% of the world’s fresh water use, and is the single biggest cause of the extinction of species and eutrophication. For both environmental and social reasons, more efforts are needed to ensure that the food we produce is consumed and not thrown away. Food waste currently accounts for 10% of our impact on the climate.

Starting at the very first page of the synthesis report, the importance of distributed and diverse climate action projects and multilevel and polycentric climate governance for sustaining the reductions in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions was highlighted throughout the report and particularly in section 14.5.
