Dystopia and Apocalypse
In-depth study of the themes of dystopia and apocalypse in Anglophone texts and genres.
Course goals
Upon completion of the course, doctoral students should be able to
- account for dystopia and apocalypse as literary themes,
- identify and analyse thematic problems and generic issues as regards dystopian and apocalyptic representations,
- analyse texts with dystopian and apocalyptic themes, and
- critically evaluate different types of literary and cultural criticism of these types of texts.
Prerequisites
The course is primarily aimed at students admitted to a doctoral programme in English, with specialisation in literary studies, but might also be of interest to doctoral students in Comparative Literature or Media and Communication Studies.
Examination
Assessment is done on an individual basis and all outcomes are assessed in the form of written assignments connected to the seminars and to individually chosen novels, as well as an oral presentation.
