Advanced topics in bilingualism
This course discusses linguistic, cognitive, educational, and social-affective aspects in the study of bilingualism. It covers bilingual language development and practices, scrutinises posited advantages and challenges of bilingual upbringing, and examines the impact of societal perceptions and language policies on bilingualism. Implications for the education of bilingual speakers as well as bilingual speakers’ identity and well-being are also considered.
Course goals
Upon completion of the course, doctoral students should be able to
- critically evaluate the concept of bilingualism,
- demonstrate knowledge of various research areas in the field,
- compare and evaluate methods to investigate phenomena related to bilingualism, and apply such methods,
- critically examine linguistic, cognitive, educational and social-affective issues in the field, and
- critically review scientific articles published in the field.
Prerequisites
Admission to a doctoral program.
Examination
Assessment takes the form of oral presentations and individual written hand-in assignments.
