Nedan följer en kort beskrivning av innehållet (ur baksidestexten):
Metaphors accompany us in everyday life, although they are mostly elusive. Yet, when used in unconventional ways, they remind us of their presence. But what aspects distinguish unconventional from conventional metaphors? To answer this question, a survey was created using stimuli from the Corpus of Academic Spoken English. These stimuli featured interactions from English as a lingua franca (ELF) speakers. One hundred sixty ELF speakers participated in the survey, which was analyzed with a mixed methods approach based on FrameNet to reduce the influence of the researcher’s intuition on the analysis. Findings indicate that unconventional metaphors can be defined by their novelty, aptness and co-text. Novelty distinguishes unconventional from conventional metaphors by using new or unused properties of metaphors. Aptness indicates the quality of metaphors and determines how well designated properties elucidate what speakers want to express. Co-text reflects the socio-cultural context in which the metaphor is embedded and biases interpretations. The research presented offers a systematic approach to unconventional metaphors, with enhanced objectivity in the study design, while enabling a definition of unconventionality based on empirical data.
