Doktorsavhandling Liliann Byman Frisén 2026:52
Nedan följer en kort beskrivning av innehållet (ur baksidestexten):
What does it mean to be able to speak in a second language? Rooted in this question, the present thesis examines how answers take shape in academia, in policy for assessment for a high-stakes standardized speaking test, and by teachers acting as raters for the test. The thesis is based on four empirical studies. Studies I–III examine teachers’ conceptualizations of second language (L2) speaking proficiency through teacher-generated scoring templates and interviews. Study IV examines policy conceptualizations through standard-setting benchmark texts. By tracing how conceptualizations branch out across academia, assessment policy, and teacher assessment practice, Liliann Byman Frisén examines how knowledge is transformed as it moves between these domains. The findings show that knowledge is both transmitted and transformed, and demonstrate how assessment practices reflect, reproduce and redefine underlying language ideologies. Moreover, the findings shed light on challenges of L2 speaking assessment, while also highlighting ways in which it can be meaningfully assessed. Speaking is claimed to be at the heart of what it means to know a second language. The thesis illuminates how this foundational skill can be assessed and, consequently, taught.
