  Research for energy-efficient paper manufacturing

  Paper manufacturing is very energy-intensive, but there is great potential for improving energy efficiency. In a comprehensive research project conducted in close collaboration with industry, researchers at Karlstad University have used data modelling and laboratory and pilot-scale experiments to generate new knowledge that can help streamline the processes.

  – Wood fibres have an incredible ability to retain water and clump together, which poses challenges in the production of paper and paperboard, says Björn Sjöstrand, docent in chemical engineering at Karlstad University. To create smooth and even paper products, we must prevent the fibres from clumping together. So, what is the solution? Lots of water. As much as 99.8 per cent water at the start of the process. Water helps separate the fibres and creates physical space between them, which makes it possible to create a smooth sheet of paper.

  Information summary regarding the personal data breach

  According to Article 34 of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), data controllers must communicate the personal data breach to the data subject without undue delay. Karlstad University has previously issued information that such a breach has occurred (see links to previous information at the bottom of this text). The following is a summary of the personal data breach, in accordance with Article 34.2 of the GDPR.

  Since 15 August 2017, Karlstad University has been using the system Adato for documenting long-term sick leave and rehabilitation. Adato is provided by the company Miljödata, which stores the information on its own servers. On Saturday 23 August, Miljödata was the victim of a cyberattack.

  How to protect yourself against digital fraud

  The cyberattack on Miljödata has resulted in certain information about current and former employees at Karlstad University being leaked and, over the weekend, published on the darknet.

  Following the incident with Miljödata’s IT system, all employees are urged to stay extra alert. A warning sign could be if you are contacted by a person or a company in an unusual or unexpected way. Particularly if it is someone you have never had contact with before. This applies regardless of whether the communication takes place via phone, text message, letter or email. 

  Remember to never share personal information such as passwords with anyone, or use BankID or Freja eID upon the request of someone else.

  Two awards for former student and researcher in mathematics

  Two prestigious awards granted to former student and researcher for contributions to mathematics and mathematics education.

  Minh Phuong Bui, postdoctoral researcher in mathematics and part of the research environment ROSE (which focuses on what happens in the classroom and the interaction between teachers and students in the learning process), has been awarded the Future Education Early Career Award in the category STEM+ for the Sustainable Development of Our Society.

  A Future as a Professional Boxer and Business Economist

  Dalian Dawody, 25 years old and a student at the Elite Sports University at Karlstad University, became world champion in Thai boxing in the 75-kilo weight class during the World Championships in Turkey in spring 2025. On the last weekend of August, he also won a championship belt in Muaythai For Life on home turf in Karlstad. At the same time, he is very close to completing his degree in the Business and Economics program after five years of study.

  Dalian Dawody was born and raised in Malmö. When he was fourteen, he and his family moved to Karlstad because they had relatives there. As his teenage years were a bit turbulent, his cousin took him to Karlstad Muaythai to try Thai boxing. There, he found an outlet for his energy and learned training discipline and sportsmanship—he found himself and his path in life, as he turned out to be a real talent in the sport. But he needed something more alongside boxing.

  Sensors for more climate-smart premises

  Starting this autumn, all public spaces such as classrooms and group rooms will be equipped with sensors. The aim is to gain a better understanding of how the premises are used. The installation of sensors does not cover offices or staff rooms.

  The purpose of installing the sensors is to measure how the premises are used, in order to make more efficient use of the premises, reduce energy consumption and improve the indoor climate. The project is conducted in collaboration with Akademiska hus and Tietoevry, and will include the installation of 250-400 sensors in total at Karlstad University.
