On 1 January Karlstad University launched three research and development projects as part of Academy for Smart Specialisation, a partnership between the university and Region Värmland aiming to renew regional industry and strengthen research.
By playing the role of national cyber security experts, doctoral students from Karlstad University won Cyber Challenge 2017, organised by the Centre for Asymmetric Threat Studies at the Swedish Defence University and the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB).

Julio Angulo was awarded his doctorate at Karlstad University in 2015 and is now doing research on user experience at Google. On 13 January he visited Karlstad University to give a lecture on his journey from Karlstad to Google to inspire students.

- I have been at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing (FER) at the University of Zagreb. This is the most prestigious university and engineering faculty in Croatia. I was there for one week on Erasmus teaching mission. I held lectures in two courses, gave student consultations for master and PhD students and I held a research colloquium.
