Exchange places
All current exchange places can be found via the search tool. There you will find information on the exchange agreements (subject areas, degree levels, language of instruction, etc.) and important information regarding each university, as well as travel reports from previous exchange students. Some agreements are part of the Erasmus+, Erasmus+ ICM and Nordlys programmes, which entitle students to scholarships.

When you search for opportunities, consider the following aspects in detail:
- Subject areas
- The study level for which you are eligible
- Courses and language of instruction
- Semester dates
There is a link to the search tool on the menu to the right of this page. Read the information provided on respective partner universities websites and contact the university directly if you have questions about courses, accommodation and prerequisites.
If you have questions about how to navigate the search tool, exchange agreements or our exchange programmes, you are welcome to contact the International Office at Karlstad University. We can share our knowledge about partner universities and from previous exchange students. You can also talk to your programme leader and study- and career counsellor about when it is suitable for you to go on exchange within your studies.
Once you have been placed, it is not possible to change university. Only select universities that are sure to offer several courses for which you can apply. The host university will decide if you meet the requirements for courses and can be admitted.
You can find which exchange places Karlstad University has in our search tool via the link to the right.
Europe
Erasmus+
Applies most often to student exchange within Europe. Via Erasmus+, an agreement is made between universities at the subject level. You can only study courses in the listed subject at the university and at the level indicated (bachelor/master). You can see in which subject an agreement is signed after you have searched for a university via the search tool. It is listed under "Subject area". There is no study fee to be paid to the university and you will automatically receive an Erasmus scholarship (around 460 - 510 Euros per month).
Download the Erasmus+ app and access useful tips and information.
Nordlys
Within the Nordic region, there is a network called Nordlys which includes universities from all over the Nordic region. Via our search tool you can find all of the universities, which are included in the network and to where you can apply from Karlstad University. Theoretically, you can apply to all subject areas offered, but some universities do apply restrictions - but since this is a network without direct exchange agreements, what you as a Nordlys student can apply for may vary. Contact the host university directly, if you have questions. Nordlys is mainly for students in subjects who do not have other networks / collaborations within their own subject area or who want to study a subject that they cannot do in their own university. Bilateral
Great Britain (GB) and Switzerland are outside the Erasmus+ programme. Studies are tuition free with all partners in GB and Switzerland, except with the University of Westminster, London GB, which involves a reduced tuition fee to study. There are no longer scholarships available for studies in GB however, the Swiss government offers funding to replace Erasmus+ scholarships.
The rest of the world
Bilateral agreements
Karlstad University also has agreements with universities that are not members of Erasmus+ or Nordlys. These agreements are known as Bilateral. Under these agreements exchange students do not pay tuition fees. Unless otherwise stated, the universities offer courses across a range of subject areas in English or the language of the country. The International Office does not provide scholarships, but you can apply on your own. Information about international scholarships through Karlstad University is available.
Erasmus+ ICM
Erasmus+ ICM is an agreement for student exchange outside of Europe, with specific universities and entitles you to an Erasmus+ scholarship. Some of these universities also offer places without scholarships, if you apply to one of them when applying for exchange studies (Erasmus+/Bilateral), you be automatically considered for a scholarship. There are currently no scholarships available for 2023/2024.
