Prerequisites
General entry requirements. Nursing licence issued by the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare.
A Degree of Bachelor of Science in Nursing (180 credits), including a degree project of 15 credits, or equivalent. Professional experience in nursing corresponding to 12 months of full-time work. Swedish 3 or Swedish as a second language 3, and English 6/A. Equivalence assessment may be made.

Education
The programme is conducted as a hybrid education, meaning that lectures and assignments take place both at Karlstad university, and on distance. The education is full times studies, demanding 40 hours working time each week. You apply to any of the six study locations: Karlstad, Eskilstuna, Falun, Gävle, Västerås, or Örebro. Please note that your 18 weeks of practical skills, will be at the same town and region you apply to. Study groups meet regularly at Karlstad university and at respective study location. Two times per semester there will be lectures, seminaries, workshops, and examinations at the university, two to four days each time. The training will provide theoretical and practical knowledge and skills in nursing and medical science in connection with the care of patients of all ages, in both emergency and planned surgery. Experienced teachers and clinically active main supervisors will guide you to in-depth knowledge within the theatre nurse's field of work. The subject area of the education is nursing, which is integrated with medical knowledge. Integrated into the program's courses, scientific methods are studied, corresponding to 7.5 ECTS credits. In addition, a degree project, 15 ECCTS credits, is included, which enables in-depth knowledge focused on the theatre nurse's field of work.Distance learning requires access to a computer, webcam, headset and a good network connection.
Form of Instruction
Teaching is both theoretical and practical, where assignments are carried out both individually and in groups. Lectures, workshops and seminars are offered at meetings at Karlstad University. Training is carried out in various clinical elements within the theatre nurse's area. Regular meetings also take place at the study locations where 4-8 students and the main supervisors have follow-ups, discussions and reflection on various study assignments.Examination
The forms of examination vary and are written or oral, individual or in groups. Examinations take place both during and at the end of each course. Specific examinations and forms of examination are stated in the respective course syllabus.Professional Contact
The education includes 18 weeks of practical training at theatre care units, when the opportunity is given to put the knowledge into practical skills. The clinical placements are provided at each study location with associated hospitals in the region. Supervision is provided by clinically active theatre nurses. During clinical placement, additional travel or accommodation expenses may occur.Course of study

There is a great need for surgical nurses in Sweden. The theatre care nurse has a wide range of career paths in all areas of surgery, both within regional surgical care or with private caregivers.
