The theory and practice of basic theatre care in perioperative care
7.5 ECTS creditsNursing (2.5 ECTS cr) and Medical Science (5 ECTS cr) are integrated in the course.
Instruction is in the form of digital lectures, literature study, a theoretical assignment, and 4 weeks of clinical
placement (VFU). This is a distance course which includes individual study and a group meeting on campus.
Students acquire and develop knowledge of the operating theatre nurse's responsibility through in-depth studies in medicine and medical care, with an emphasis on forming a holistic picture of patients to be able to plan their perioperative care. The use of medical technology in surgery is studied in terms of guidelines and in relation to aspects of the environment and occupational health. All instruction emphasises the scientific basis and evidence-based knowledge of the field.
During the clinical placement, the operating theatre nurse's responsibility for the perioperative care of patients is studied and practiced in connection with an operation. This is followed by a presentation in a seminar with discussion and reflection regarding the care of the patient in terms of topographical anatomy, hygiene/aseptics, medical technology, surgical methodology, ethics, and perioperative care. Throughout the clinical placement, students receive supervision to develop their ability to provide care related to basic surgical procedures. Students also enhance their own professional development, approach, and independence related to the professional function of the operating theatre nurse. During the clinical placement, students are expected to demonstrate understanding of what it means to respect the integrity and autonomy of patients and colleagues, and use their competence to assume a professional approach.
Throughout the course, students are responsible for reflecting upon their own needs of further knowledge regarding topographical anatomy, hygiene/aseptics, medical technology, surgical methodology, ethics, and perioperative care, in relation to the specific clinical placement.
